From Library Journal
Struggling to make a life for herself and her family after her pastor husband is accused on a late-night talk show of embezzling scholarship funds and then dies in a car accident on his way to confront the show's host, Nan Springfield has her hands full. She's got an overbearing brother-in-law who wants her to sue, a family of delightful but fragile foster children, a church with a grudge, and, on top of everything else, a guilt-ridden talk-show host who insists on bombarding her with gifts she won't accept. But when she meets Harry WooleryAkind, generous, attractive, and a veritable knight in shining armorAthings begin to look a bit brighter. Then she discovers who he really is. Known for her award-winning historical romances, which often treat serious issues with exquisite sensitivity and subtle humor, Mittman applies her skills to the contemporary subgenre with equal flair to produce a warm, lively story that is emotionally involving, laced with laughter and mystery, and sure to please her many fans. Mittman (A Kiss To Dream On, Dell, 1998) lives in Centerport, NY.

From Booklist
Mittman, an award-winning historical author, has written her first contemporary romance, and it is a delightful tale. Nan Springfield is the widow of a minister who died suddenly after being accused of embezzling church funds. Harry Woolery, using the name and persona Harris Tweed, is a shock jock on late night radio; the one who has accused the good reverend of embezzlement and therefore, or so Nan thinks, the man indirectly responsible for his death. But when they finally meet, Harry finds himself falling helplessly and hopelessly in love with Nan, and with her kids, and the story of their unlikely love is filled with the same warmth and compassion that have made Mittman's historicals so popular. Her characters, both main and secondary, walk right off the page and straight into our hearts. Mittman's latest effort will appeal to readers of LaVyrle Spencer and Debbie Macomber, and everyone who loves upbeat and nurturing romances. Ann Bouricius

5.0 out of 5 stars absolutely beautiful!, December 9, 1999
This is one of the loveliest books I've read in a long time. Stephanie Mittman brings her characters to full life. I loved Nan, who had so much love in heart for the children she cared for--she brought tears to my eyes. And Harry was incredibly real--a man with faults who fell in love and gave his entire heart and soul to Nan. The secondary characters were also terrific, as were the very special children. While I loved everything about this book, what I think I liked best was that the characters were just so REAL. I cared about them and what happened to them. I finished this book in one day and it truly touched my heart. Bravo, Ms. Mittman, for a beautiful, beautiful, book.

1.0 out of 5 stars Misled and disappointed - this was not an enjoyable read, August 30, 2000
By A Customer
From the synopsis and the style of cover art (very foolish of me I know), I had expected a romantic comedy. This was *definitely* not the book I received.

Almost all the characters (as pointed out by an earlier reviewer) were not in the least endearing and any appeal that the lead female character had was a mystery to me: self sacrificing to the point of stupidity (I smell a burning martyr); absolutely no common sense although she was portrayed as being a wonderful mother; lost in her own little world with no grasp of reality ... The male lead was marginally better but he is portrayed as falling in love with her while she lurches uselessly from one problem to another. You cannot help but ask yourself, why? how?

The writing was good, but the endless suffering of the characters made reading this book a chore rather than a pleasure.

4.0 out of 5 stars Touching and Emotional, February 10, 2000
By Sherri Frenchik (Eugene, OR) - See all my reviews
I enjoyed this book very much, I laughed and cried and I think that makes for a good read. It means the author did a great job of really making feel what the characters in the book are feeling. If you have never read Stephanie Mittman books before, you are really missing out on some great books. She really does write like LaVyrle Spencer.
