Worth a shot,
By Kathy Sardella "micromedic" (Trooper, PA USA) - See all my reviews We are advised by the medical community to take the Triptan at the first tiny twinge of a migraine where it will work 60 to 80% of the time on the first pill. Problem is, the pills cost soooooo much and you only get 6 or 9 pills depending on brand, per month. If you are having migraines sevral times a week, you can't afford to do that and you wait until you are sure it's a migraine before using your precious pill. This is also the least effective way to treat an acute attack. With the Head On, you can give that a try at the first sign of trouble and still be able to take a Triptan if needed. Be advised, you can ask for a second migraine prescription and fill that on your insurance in the same month. My insurance allows Zomig on their formulary (not my favorite pill) with a $30 co-pay, but I have a second prescription I fill at the same time for Imitrex 100mg tabs, $30 co-pay. This way I have 6 Zomigs and 9 Imitrex for the month. I also stopped artificial sweeteners since the New year (2008)and noticed a dramatic decrease in the number of migraines. So try eliminating any possible triggers to at least get the number of attacks down to manageable. If you get many migraines a week, you need to try the preventive medications. First ones are the blood pressure pills classified as Beta blockers or Calcium Channel blockers. Then, there is Topamax which is given to people with nerve pain or seizures and found to decrease the number of migraines. The side effects were too much for me, but worth a try to see if it helps you. With the preventive meds and change in diet, the hope is to decrease the number of attacks and stretch out your Triptan supply. Taking Triptans and pain killers several times a week will actually start bringing on migraine attacks due to rebound. Would I recommend Head-on for my patients? Yes. It's cheap, portable and you can use it as often as you want. Every 15 mins if you like. If it cuts down on the number of attacks, wonderful! And you save your pills for a full-blown attack. Naproxen (Aleve) has been shown to be a better minor pain reliever for migraines than other over the counter pain meds, so I would take two Aleve and use the Head-on Migraine stick at the first tiny sign of a migraine.

Does Nothing,
I decided to buy this product out of desperation for migraine relief when other medicines weren't working. It does absolutely nothing except make my skin feel tingly from the menthol and my bangs stick to my forehead in a clump. I know everyone is different so it might be worth a try, but I just can't imagine getting real relief from the homeopathic ingredients it utilizes. My worst migraines don't respond to triptans, ibuprofen, or even low-dose narcotics, so I wasn't surprised that it didn't work. If you get severe migraines, don't even bother trying it. Instead, you should absolutely see a doctor and get some effective preventative and/or abortive medication. In the meanwhile, an ice pack is the next-best-thing.

Even better than patches, because I can use it anywhere I am, at the office; at an event; etc. Works; love it. Better than pills. May not cure but really helps to keep it down to a dull roar.

I have tension headaches constantly and was forever taking aspirin, tylenol, ibuprophen, etc. to no avail. I have been using headon for aproximately one year and it is the only thing that works for me. I used to purchase it at Walmart until they recently quit carrying it. It honestly scared me however I did find it online at Amazon.com.

I've been getting chronic migraines for years, and very little does anything to soothe them. However, Head On does work wonders! My mom sent it to me a while ago, and I was hesitant to use it at first, not believing that it would do anything, since it's just a topical medication. But one day I decided to give it a shot, and it definitely helped my migraine. You just apply it liberally all over your forehead, temples, neck, wherever, and within a minute the effects kick in. I keep it tucked in my purse at all times, and use it even if I start to feel a headache come on. While it isn't by any means a "cure," it certainly makes migraines more bearable!

It actually works,
By I always thought the commercials for Head On were ridiculous and it made me not want to try it. One day my girlfriend's friend busted out a stick of Head On and started rubbing all over her head. She said she had the same type of migraines and she said it actually worked. When my GF told me about this I was skeptical. I was at the store buying some other medicine one day and I saw it and decided to give it a try. I now use it every time I have a migraine and it goes away within 5 - 15 minutes. Even after you first put it on the Menthol soothes your head and it takes your mind off the headache a bit. After about 5-15 minutes it just disappears. Sometimes the migraine will come back a few hours later but I just rub it on there again and it goes away. It doesn't make my forehead look shiny or sticky or anything, but it does feel a bit odd after you put it on. I'd rather put up with that though that a migraine.

It definitely helps,
By And even when I can use my narcotics, I always add the "Head On" as well, because it helps and also because the narcotics can take a good hour or so to kick in. I think the sensation on my forehead feels really good when my head is hurting. It's like another reviewer mentioned...perhaps it gives you something to focus on besides the pain. It is indeed best described as a menthol-like sensation, but without any odor whatsoever (you know how smell-sensitive us migraine sufferers are). If you get a lot of headaches, there is no harm in keeping a tube of this in your purse, in your desk at work, in your medicine cabinet at home...and swiping it across your forehead when you feel a headache coming on. Give it a try!
