Our success begins with our attitude. A lot of job search guides out there tell you the who, what, where, when and why and all that good stuff, but they always leave out the most important factor -- one's attitude. This book not only walks us through each step of the process; it reminds us that we need to be aware of what our mindset is as we continue to move forward. This is why this guide is so refreshing.
Remember especially during the job search process that it's what you don't say that reveals more about you than you will ever realize. As a result, we need to make sure that the messages we are sending out does not conflict with our body language, attitudes and words. The problems arise if you are saying yes, but your actions are saying no. We need to make sure that everything is in synch.
There are enough "woe is me" stories out there - everyone has one. But if you are able to remain positive even during the times of adversity, it will show others that you have confidence and resiliency no matter how bad things are. Nobody wants to be around, much less hire someone that has a negative attitude. What you have accomplished in your past career can only take you so far; your positive attitude will make a difference and can take you the rest of the way.
William James' quote at the beginning of the first chapter was used to kick off this book. It reads, "It is our attitude at the beginning of a difficult task which, more than anything else, will affect its successful outcome". When I finished reading the book, I flipped through and read all the quotes again. This particular quote didn't mean much to me when I started reading this book, but when I finished; I realized that it was very fitting. I actually got goose bumps!...
This book is very easy reading. The discussion questions serve to help us think of ways we can use and apply what was presented to us. Thanks for an awesome book - with an attitude!Read more ›
A great read packed with actionable advice! With the book logically broken out by job search phase and activity, you can easily pick up this book at any point of your job search and gain value. Chapter 5 "Lay-off, Fired, or Leaving on Your Own" flows through to Chapter 45 "Thoughts on Negotiating an Offer" with sections in between about creating an elevator pitch, choosing target companies, productive networking, smart interview preparation, and building on small wins.
What sets this book apart from other job search books? Why should this book be on your nightstand? Because it wonderfully blends technical know-how with guidance on building and maintaining a positive attitude and self-confidence, two very important elements of a successful job search. There are plenty of worthwhile books offering smart advice on resume development, networking, and interviewing, but if your morale is down or you're losing steam due to an extended search, it may be hard to follow through effectively.
If you don't approach an interview with confidence, you risk losing to another candidate who's on their A-game. If you network with anything less than a positive frame of mind, you risk potential contacts missing the value you bring to the table. In a successful job search, you need your head in the game, first and foremost, and that's what Tim Tyrell-Smith is here to show you with HeadStrong.
This is book is filled with practicality and is extremely timely for many as we consider our economy. For anyone who is searching for a job, this book will surely provide you insight, ideas, and action steps that can (and will) help you in the process. Not only that, Tim's a great guy and has helped a lot of people over many years, so gaining his collective insights here can be immensely valuable! Give it a read!
Headstrong is a terrific resource for anyone engaged in a job search or a career transition. I think the central theme of the book - that it's critical to maintain a positive attitude during a job search - is spot on, and the book is full of readily accessible, actionable insights into how to conduct an effective search. I also recommend checking out Tim's blog and website as they are excellent as well.
