Disappointing,

My husband is trying to eliminate tyramines and other migraine triggers. I was hoping to find a cookbook that would help us create meals that tasted good, were healthy and safe.
This cookbook misses the mark on several fronts. The worst thing is that it takes a very conservative approach to what is safe to eat. Most recipes included items that we had concluded were not safe or were borderline (determined from researching several different reliable sources). In the initial stages of testing out whether or not tyramines are triggers it is especially important to have an inclusive list and not make exceptions. The second factor were the recipes themselves. There was very little here that would allow you to make an actual meal and no guidelines on how you would do that. Third, as another poster pointed out, the recipes are not generally healthy, high in fats and low in vegetables and fruits. This could be compensated for if the rest of the meal were healthy, but without any guidelines it would be difficult to do. I am hoping to find another cookbook but in the meantime I have been adapting recipes with quite a bit of success. Maybe I'll write a cookbook when I'm done!

Medicine For Your Stomach,

Like most headache sufferers, I'd do anything to get rid of my migranes. While I knew that food had a big impact on headaches, I didn't know much about it. This book provides all the answers including which foods to eat and which to avoid. Then the book offers "headache-free" recipes which is a must if you like to eat many of the "banned" foods. The recipes I've tried so far have been outstanding and relatively easy to make. I can honestly say that, at least for now, I look forward to making something new every night. It was comforting for me that the book was written by two medical doctors including Dr. David Marks, a Yale educated headache specialist. I find that most non-medical solutions to medical problems come from nutritionists who lack the professional training and education of a doctor. While I don't believe food is the only source of headaches, understanding the food-headache relationship is important. The results speak for themselves...since reading this book, I've definitly had fewer and less severe headaches.

I had headaches almost daily for about 30 years and FINALLY did something about it. Between this book and the "1-2-3 Program" book, I've eliminated about 98% of my headaches - headaches I thought were incurable.
With almost any headache prevention book, you will be told to go on an elimination diet to rid yourself of foods that can trigger headaches. This book has many recipes for folks like us (you're reading this because you have headaches, right?) For a life with significantly reduced pain, the price of this book is negligible. Buy it, you won't regret it.

Dr. Marks, a Migraine specialist and his wife, a pediatrician and wonderful cook, make quite a team with this book. Normally elimination diets to determine Migraine triggers are grueling, but they have made it much easier. This is FAR MORE than a cook book. Dr. Marks offers expert insight into Migraine disease and coping with it. Thank you, Dr. Marks!

Unhealthy Recipes,

I'm betting that the recipes in this book are tasty. They are full of fat, salt, and sugar. I had expected more from a couple of physicians. Part of getting rid of my headaches has been learning about proper nutrition. I've been learning to cook healthy foods. This book was a major step backwards for me, so I returned my copy. I would suggest finding Dr. Mark's list of foods to avoid, which can be found online, and just avoid those foods. Personally, I've avoided those foods, but significantly reducing my daily sodium intake was much more effective in reducing my daily headaches. Joel Fuhrman, M.D. says that sodium is very bad for headaches. He is the author of Eat To Live and is a board-certified family physician who specializes in preventing and reversing disease through nutritional and natural methods. Eat To Live is a must-have book about health and nutrition, in my opinion.

There are some really good recipes in the book but I was disappointed that so many recipes contain foods believed to be migraine triggers in them. If you are trying to restrict your diet completely from migraine triggers, most of the recipes will not meet your needs without many modifications.

After reading Heal Your Headache by Dr. Buchholz, I was anxious to find a good headache-prevention cookbook. But I need a cookbook in which ALL the recipes are free of the commonly known food triggers. Isn't that the point? Well, this book has many recipes with known headache triggers. Apparently we are expected to know which foods are triggers for us and to then alter the recipes accordingly. Well, I'm tired of having to alter recipes! That's what I have to do all the time with regular cookbooks. I thought that this cookbook would be different, but I was wrong. I appreciate that some food triggers are avoided here, but what about all the commonly known triggers that ARE in these recipes, such as lemon juice, orange juice, and onions? I bought the book, tried 3-4 recipes (none particularly good), then threw the book away.

Migraines No More... The importance of diet,

I've suffered from severe, often chronic, migraines for over 12 years. After finally being seen by some of the nation's top physicians at various specialty clinics across the US for "pulse" migraine treatments (6 months on a specialized medication plan then 6 months+ off that medication) I decided to also try a natural approach to migraine prevention. After much research surrounding diet and migraines I found this book. What I like about this cookbook is that it serves as a great starting point without page long lists of "don't eats". This book alone is no solution, and you need to work to discover your triggers with your physician, but this book is a gateway to getting you started on the right path. I found that this cookbook helped me to know what to lookout for when grocery shopping and that it gave me ideas for tweaking my own recipes.
I took the cookbook seriously, probably more so than was necessary, and switched to organic foods and organic consumer products. With a "green" organic environment and diet, personalized pulse treatments under guidance from my neurologists and plenty of water, sleep and exercise I found a significant reduction in the intensity, frequency and duration of my migraines. Non-rebound and non/low-addictive medications on a personalized pulse treatment plan + this cookbook + Whole Foods and organic cleaning products, etc. + an organic detoxification + Alive Multivitamins + 8 hours of sleep + lots of water + 30-45 minutes of exercise at least 3 times a week = substantial relief. I've been medication free for one year (I still have migraines... but I'm down to 2-4 per month from 27!). Magnesium was also a huge help. 400mg just before, during and just after a menstrual cycle works wonders! I also tried nerve block treatments, which didn't help, and was on a waiting list for Botox injections (thankfully I didn't have to get to that point... though I hear they can work wonders). At the end of the day I think it is about finding what works best for your unique body chemistry. Best of luck.

What about vegetarians?!,

As a vegetarian, I knew I was taking a chance with this title. However, I had just committed to Dr. Buchholz's 1-2-3 Program for healing headaches & was eager to try it out. Needless to say, being a vegetarian isn't a good fit and sooo many of the recipes in the book contained the triggers I was supposed to avoid. Very disappointed!
