HEADHUNTERS, March 31, 2002
This review is from: Headhunters: Stories from the 1st Squadron, 9th Cavalry in Vietnam, 1965-1971 (Hardcover)
This is real history! The 1st Squadron 9th cavalry is the most decorated unit that served in the Vietnam war They were the only "true" cavalry unit. They served as a model for other "recon" units of the war, there tactics are used by all the Rangers, Special Forces, Seals, Etc. today. They all deserve the Congressional Medal of Honor!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Stories of Historical Significance, November 12, 2000
By A Customer
This review is from: Headhunters: Stories from the 1st Squadron, 9th Cavalry in Vietnam, 1965-1971 (Hardcover)
When you read this book, you will see and feel what a portion of the men of the 1/9th Air Cavalry experienced while serving in Vietnam. No one can fully understand what a person experiences in war if they've not been there, but this book gives you an insight into what each man experienced and how it has affected them afterwards. Anyone that has ever wondered what a Recon unit goes through in war, this would be the book for them. This would make a great addition to a military book collection.

Real stories by real people, July 15, 2007
This review is from: Headhunters: Stories from the 1st Squadron, 9th Cavalry in Vietnam, 1965-1971 (Hardcover)
This book is not one persons views of the actions of the 1st Squadron, 9th cavalry during the Vietnam war. Rather it is a compilation of the stories of more than 2 dozen different men in different roles. Some are well written. Others are not so great. But they are real. These men use their own word to describe their own experiences, feelings, and actions.
Therefore, it does not cover the overall situation. It does not all fit together into one message. It is fragmented and often uses terms and acronyms that are not defined - but the editor does help out most of the time.
However, I really liked this book _because_ it is not polished and the horror, anguish, excitment, thrill, terror, pain, frustration, etc. of each contributer comes through. Real men. A real war. Real situation. Real stories.
This is not the book to get if you want:
1. a book that explains why things happened
2. an overview of the war, or even the actions of this troop
3. to avoid reading about blood, pain, and death
4. an easy reading, polish account
Get this book if you want to feel a taste of what the soldiors experienced in the far east - and when they got back home.
