The Art of Manliness is actually a website that is full of great information. They also have a facebook page and will let you know when new articles are posted. I believe it was last year that 31 Basic Life Skills was posted. The great thing about it, for me as a parent, was that as they posted, it made me think of things that we might need to talk about before our son left for college next year. Now that time is months away, and being able to send this book with him is one more way to show my support to him as he transitions from boy to man. Many of these things may have been taught in the home, when a young man is really out on his own, the details that he may have forgotten may be important. This book is practical, but also gives a sense of the "arm around the shoulder" that may be comforting to a young man trying to make his way in the world for the first time. I cannot overstate how great I think these lessons are, and I wish the Art of Manliness website would publish more of their articles in book form.

Being a fan of artofmanliness.com, their books, and just starting out on my own, I found this book to be easy to read and enlightning. It's set out for the 31 days and gives out neat advice, particularly how to gain credit, ways of cooking with little material, and advice on networking, along with simple guides for tying a tie, making a bed, and changing a toilet's "guts". All of this is provided in a neat, blue cover and I'd recommended it to newcomers.

My gripe with it is that, for some of its subjects, the book provides links to artofmanliness.com articles. I don't discredit these articles' accuracy and helpfulness, they are good, but are not guaranteed to hold up years from now. It felt like promotion for the site and a cheap way to shorten pages instead of providing physical content that can be read years from now. Also, more could've been provided for simple subjects; more ways to tie a tie.

It's a small negative in the series, as the first two artofmanliness books were self-contained creations, but still one I would recommend.

All of the information Brett and Kate have included in this book is valuable for anyone who is leaving home and heading out into the world. It is what I am giving as graduation gifts this year. It will be awesome to give to anyone leaving on a mission, going off to college, or even getting married.
Once again the McKays have put together an awesome book which definately deserves a place on the shelf next to their others!

I would give this book 4.5 stars if I could. Overall, the book works as a primer on various skills like cooking or fixing a flat tire. My only gripe is the fact that the book sometimes points to URLs that link to the actual Art of Manliness website, where a short elaboration in the book would've sufficed. With that said, I wouldn't mind going on to the AoM website but perhaps not everyone has Internet access.

Bought this book for my son who is going off to college. Lots of good information for someone on there own for the first time and even someone who has been on his own for years.

This started out as a series of articles on the website art of manliness dot com. They were expanded and organized into this very competent advice journal.

I enjoy the quality of the articles on the website, and I was surprised to find that a sizable portion of their readers are women. Maybe they are looking for Manly Men!!

Solid advice, fine for your daughters. Highly Recommended!

This book was overly simple. I suppose it could be of benefit to some people, but it just seemed dry and useless to me.

You can learn much more from the Art of Manliness blog itself.

I would not recommend this book except as a novelty gift.

I'm glad with the book itself. But with the delivering... I just found the package laying down on my aparment's stairs, at the hands of anyone who could just take it for themselves... b***h please, it's only a 3 floor building, the delivery person could just throw the book a bit more nearly my door at least!

Whatever, I'm THANKFUL for the book, I'm starting with the "Mind" Skills (self-reliance, socialization, week planning, etc) rather than the "Hand" Skills (laundry, grocery shopping, trouser ironing, etc) since I'm as the elder son I'm kind of adquainted with the rudiments of that stuff, but I know that "helping with laundry" it's not "doing all the laundry" so I guess I'll take benefit for reading those chapters too eventually.

Something really good I found also it's the recommended material. The videos and the lectures mentioned in the chapters along with the ease of finding them on the web. And about the book's format, I find it quite agreeable. If this book is not on your pack, you will notice it. But it's size would not be a problem while packing it. The aesthetics from the book cover and the chapters' front are really reminiscent to the AoM universe.

Also the biggest good this particular book provides it's the LEGACY FACTOR. Things running like their running now in my life, I'll be heading out on my own between about 6 months and 1 year and half at most. Then I still may keep the book for the first 5 o 10 years, or even more, why not. But then there will be this little cousin, or nephew, or some friend's son, if now my own, reaching my current age and with the same worries about leaving the nest... and I will gladly pass on all the practical knowledge I still getting now with this fine guidebook you wrote.
