4.0 out of 5 stars Fine book for this age group, July 17, 1999

This review is from: The Headless Gargoyle (Mercer Mayer's Critters of the Night) (Paperback)
The Critters of the Night series is good value for the money. The series starts with early readers with only a few words on the page, progresses through first and second grade readers (of which this is one,) and continues to 48 page texts with large print but few illustrations for the 4th grade crowd.

My kids enjoyed returning again and again to the same characters. These are bright, rowdy books with a feisty young heroine and a clever, active young hero. The Critters family is reminiscent of the 'Adams Family' and has some of the same wry humor for the adults.

I think of these as more 'read to Mommy' books than the other way round. I believe even the elementary books will appeal more to five and up than to the four year olds. Several are in the 'Step into Reading' program ... so you will know exactly how to place them as to age group.

My favorite of the series is 'Chomp, Chomp'
