Good to the nitty girtty,

Surfing through Metal Blade's website, I read about the unkown 40 Grit. They are from the metal capital of the San Francisco Bay Area, and have hooked up with some impressive bands as an opening act, such as S.O.D., Anthrax, and Testament. They have a unqiue sound which is both melodic and melanchy. It not speed metal, but a slow grind like found on a Pantera album but with superior vocals. Favorite tracks for myself were "Ground Zero," "Sneaky Glass Face," "Fade Into You," and "Three Spaces." This would please any hardcore metal fan, but it does lean towards the new sound or school of metal. But a heck of a lot better than what the MTV establishment is putting out there. Also nice to see Metal Blade giving new bands a chance to get their sound out there. All in all, a nice first effort by 40 Grit.

I heard of 40 Grit through DirecTV's "Metal" channel, and I thoght they ruled. I went over to mp3.com and listened to some stuff off of the new album(I'm going to write a review for it after I'm finished here)as well as this one. This album is an incredible album, and I think this band should be getting way more recognition. Since no one has reviewed this here yet, and not many people have heard 40 Grit, I'll describe their sound. I'd say that on this album they kind of sound like a cross between "The More Things Change..."-era Machine Head and KoRn's first album. It's great stuff. Some highlights of the album are "Three Spaces", which has a great riff, then adds an even heavier one with a great groove towards the end, "Doing Time", which is just a great song, and "Tension", which sounds like a more hypnotic Machine Head. But those aren't the only good songs, as this whole album is incredible. If you're into really heavy music, do yourself a favor and go buy this NOW!!

This is a great cd. I picked it off ebay for $1 brand new. I figured what the heck, for a buck I'll give it a listen. Boy was I glad! Even though this band borders on new school metal/light hardcore. It's great! All the instruments and songs flow really well. This cd didnt leave my car for a good 2 months. If you haven't heard of 40 grit. Buy this album! You won't be disappointed.

Great stab at commercial post-grunge metal,

Deep from within the wellspring of modern hard rock has sprung a plethora of new bands raised and versed in metal but betraying a resolute passion for the better aspects of the grunge era (think Alice In Chains, not Nirvana or Pearl Jam). 40 Grit are one of the better of these bands to come along. More committed to the underground aspects of their sound than the Collective Souls and Bushes of the world, 40 Grit nonetheless slice through the pop sensitive conscious by firmly wielding the cutting edge of modern rock. From the hypnotic sway of "Groin" to the industrial-without-electronics vibe of "Ground Zero," "Heads" steers well clear of anything that might not be considered Billboard material, but on those terms it's an astonishing debut.

I got this album (and it's also excellent sequel, Nothing To Remember)for free from a guy I know named Kevin Young. That name mean anything to you? Probably not. Well, he happened to have been the bassist for a band called Forty Grit. After hearing about how good his band was (not from him), I asked him if he had any copies lying around. He did. Now, this was way before I was into bands like Machine Head and Korn, and I can honestly say this is what really got me into heavy metal.
Listening to this you really find yourself wondering why no one knows what it is. I think Forty Grit deserves some radio time, but it is kinda cool to have some exclusivity. There's not a single bad song here, and as there were no "hits", there's really nothing to call filler either. My favorites are: Groin, Sneaky Glass Face, Fade Into You (killer acoustic fadeout at 4:00, check it out!), and Serving Time. And for crying out loud, Amazon has about 16 New copies listed here at this time, starting at less than a dollar. What's to lose? Buy a copy for yourself and enjoy some awesome unknown metal. |
