5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent album!, May 31, 2009

This review is from: Heads Tails & Aces (Audio CD)
Matt Schofield is, from my point of view, the best British blues guitarist around and his last work confirms, I believe, my opinion. Heads, Tails & Aces is a very good and solid electric blues album in which Matt's guitar playing reaches the level of excellence. Matt leaves the "trio" formation and adds a bass player to the band. The result is a less "jazz" and more "blues" oriented sound. Matt's guitar playing is wonderful from start to finish and his style remains very fresh and personal, a nice mix between Robben Ford, Ronnie Earl and (the great) Albert Collins. Up-tempo and slow numbers are well alternated in the mix and the listening flows easily throughout the entire CD and when you arrive at the end it looks like the album was only few minutes long. Talking about the songs I believe that Lay It Down deserves a special mention, a great slow number in which Matt delivers his best solo. In conclusion a great effort that surely will please all Matt's fans but also everyone who love the blues. If you are not familiar with Matt's music this is a very good point to start with. Highly recommended.

5.0 out of 5 stars His best yet!, May 30, 2009

I have Matt's two previous releases, and his life albums. This studio release really shows Matt's growth as a songwriter. His guitar playing has always been outstanding and this release the guitar is a bit more 'front and center'. Most of the songs are originals, with the exception of a scorching rendition of Freddie King's 'Woman Across The River'. Matt Schofield is a unique artist. One who is not willing to compromise his music for commercial success. Anyone who enjoyed Matt's previous releases will dig Heads, Tails & Aces. If you are looking for some 'new' music, in the Blues/Jazz realm, give this one a try. You won't be sorry.

4.0 out of 5 stars Smakey, Jazzy, Blusey, perfection, October 24, 2009
This review is from: Heads Tails & Aces (Audio CD)
If you are a Robben Ford fan...this guy is your man. Tempos and phrasing of the songs, Jazzy style all remind me of Robben Ford. Not to say Matt is a copy cat...very similar styles and most enjoyable. Give it a listen and you will not be disappointed.
