Editorial Reviews

Review

Our world needs poetry that can speak openly of body and spirit their desire to live. It needs poetry that can speak to our difficult time about our cohabitation with nature. She Heads into the Wilderness is an important book as well as a beautiful one. It is populated by beasts, insects, birds, human children and men, growing-and-dying things, and among them walks an open-eyed woman who happens to be a gifted poet. Is she our foremother Eve? Yes and no, no and yes. Read her words. Walk alongside her. Line by line, phrase by phrase, take pleasure and wisdom from Anne Marie Macari's radiant poems. --Alicia Ostriker

I was ready to love this book just because of the title. I was so pleased to find that Macari's work lived up to my expectations. The poet is ready to get her hands dirt with these pieces, ready to take the reader deep into the complicated relationship we have with our bodies and our world. I would argue that the poem, "Mid-Summer, Anything Can Be Bruised" is something of an ars poetica:

"Drenching myself with hunger, eating
more oranges, in love with my hunger."

Unlike most of mankind that assumes we are the pinnacle of life, Macari envies the natural world, feeling like an intruder upon the insects' land. With the rise of eco-criticism as a major academic field, She Heads into the Wilderness not only complements that trend, but also beats it to the punch with her intricate weaving of modern humanity and timeless nature.
