5.0 out of 5 stars A Transition Album
The previous review has a few inaccuracies I thought I'd correct. First off, the beats on all of Atmosphere's albums, including this one, are produced and created by Ant, not DJ Abilities. Ant does not perform live, and so Slug often used to perform with DJ Abilities (and others). This may change in the next album as Atmosphere now includes a band soon to tour, but it's...

3.0 out of 5 stars 5 stars for the bonus disc!
Forget the actual CD. It's a touch better than Slug's newer releases, but it's basically his typical slightly girly type of rapping with half decent beats.

BUT, the bonus CD you get with this features some early matieral from slug, musab and others which is extremely good. The bonus disc has some very raw beats and aggresive rhyming which sounds like it could...

5.0 out of 5 stars A Transition Album, January 13, 2005
This review is from: Headshots: Se7en (Audio CD)
The previous review has a few inaccuracies I thought I'd correct. First off, the beats on all of Atmosphere's albums, including this one, are produced and created by Ant, not DJ Abilities. Ant does not perform live, and so Slug often used to perform with DJ Abilities (and others). This may change in the next album as Atmosphere now includes a band soon to tour, but it's extermely likely Ant will be included in the production.

Slug has never been 1/3 of Atmosphere, he has and always will be the main driving force and only consistent member of the group. Even when Spawn was a member of Atmosphere, Slug was still clearly the leader and brains beyond the operation, as evidenced by the tracks on Overcast!, all of which were dominated by Slug.

Yes, this album is quite different from the newer stuff, and represents a critical moment in Atmosphere's evolution. Of course, anyone can listen to it. Even those silly "fan boys." It's a ridiculous notion to suggest that because something has changed, people won't like earlier incantations of the same group. It's that elitist old school b.s. and it's annoying. Some may not like it, but most hip-hop fans will probably enjoy it.

What makes this album so interesting is how raw it is, and, as Slug says in the liner notes, how it's representative of his transformation as an MC. Recorded between Overcast! and Lucy Ford, you can witness Slug move from being a whitty, well-versed thug to something deeper and more innovative. Both elements are present. "The Abusing of the Rib" is one of the more evolved tracks on the album, while "@ It Again" is about sleeping with all sorts of girls in the Twin Cities, including yours of course. Note that I say "evolved" not in the sense that one song is better than another, but rather more representative of Slug's later work (Lucy Ford).

This album represents a critical moment in the history of what I believe is the best hip hop group (individual) out there. While it doesn't have the catchiest melodies (the beats are great, just not catchy), it has some amazing rhymes and showcases Slug's ability to flow quickly and rap prolifically. Check it out.

5.0 out of 5 stars My favorite Atmosphere release, January 28, 2005
This review is from: Headshots: Se7en (Audio CD)
I've had this one on cassette for years, and it's great to see it finally released on cd. I've always thought this was Slug's best work, though according to his liner notes he doesn't seem to agree. I got into Rhymesayers by listening to old headhsots mixtapes and the Overcast album. I was lucky enough to have friends from the twin cities who turned me onto Rhymesayers early on. For a while there it was up there with my favorite undergroung hip hop. As other reviewers have noted this tape sparks the transition between Slug as a battle rhymer and his more personal, intropsective music. What the music magazines would later dub emo-hop (barf). This tape was just straight up, underground, four track magnificence. Any doubt that Slug has skills on the mic can be put to rest by this tape. I'm sorry to say that I really don't care for the last Atmosphere album and even God Loves Ugly was a stretch for me. People will no doubt point out that artists have to grow, ect. That's fine, but I have my tastes, and this album represents everything that I love about Atmopshere. Definitley a must have for a fan of their earlier work and any fan of underground hip hop. Overcast is classic, but this one outshines Overcast in my opinion. More raw, but more slamming. If you have any reservations about Atmosphere, this tape will likely convert you. In fact, anyone who likes underground hip hop should buy this CD.

Im not going to say who will like this and who wont and all that crap. I just know I like it, its not the best but its great in my eyes. The style is similar to Overcast! Nobody mentioned the best of Headshots CD that comes with this, I would have dished out the cash to buy that if it were sold seperately as it is the bombs. If you like Atmosphere buy this, I buy any atmosphere material I can get my hands on. There are many other great hip hop crews from Minnesota, check out Heiruspecs, Kanser, Oddjobs, and of course everyone else on Rhymesayers.

5.0 out of 5 stars How Many HeadShots Does It Take To Get To Se7en??, December 6, 2005
This review is from: Headshots: Se7en (Audio CD)
After the release of Se7en's Travels in 2003, The collective duo of Slug and Ant decided to re-release their most popular mixtape to date onto CD format. the 7th volume of the Headshots series is quite possibly their greatest mixtape to date from the well known series. Unfortunately, from what I understand the other Headshots mixtapes can only be obtained in the Midwest region. However, this was my introduction to Atmosphere after hearing this album over a friend's house, then purchasing my own copy, I was instantly hooked on the strategic flow of Slug and on point production of Ant. Atmosphere was my reason for breaking away from the hold that mainstream hip hop had on me(Thank God!). Ever since my purchase in early February 2005, I have many plenty of investments in other underground hip hop, mainly from the Rhymesayers label, among others. Atmosphere fans will agree that out of 5 studio releases, Headshots ranks near the top with tracks like "The Abusing Of The Rib", "Tracksmart" featuring Eyedea and my personal favorite "The Jackpot". Slug's on time and heartfelt delivery will not disappoint fans of underground hip hop.

5.0 out of 5 stars Good album, better additional disc., March 28, 2006

This review is from: Headshots: Se7en (Audio CD)
This is an excellent album. Atmosphere that was pre-Overcast is my favorite kind! However the best part of the CD isn't the CD itself, but the bonus disc that features the Headsho7s' Greatest Hits. I'm not even going to review the main disc, it's pretty good, however I think that should be the bonus disc and the second disc should be the main attraction. The second disc contains tracks from The Dynospectrum, Slug, Sess, Beyond, and a few other under the rock RhymeSayers. Every track on the CD is great, which is pretty much hit or miss considering there's only ten. Some of the highlights of the bonus disc are "7th St. Entry" a song about someone who leaves messages in the 7th St. Entry bathroom that are duragatory to Slug and his abilities. The next great track is the best on the CD: "Multiples Reprise [Remix]" this CD blows the other Multiple tracks you may have heard out of the water. The story is all about the many characters of Uptown Minneapolis, and their expolits. It goes into the tales of over ten people and how they all intertwine, and the downfall of each. Track 06 "Funny Colors In My Mushroom Trails" is about Slug and Sess's experiences with Mushrooms. It is hauntingly accurate and will make any shroom user think back and wonder what the eff they were doing. "F**k The Bulls**t" is another awesome track, about people who complain about life when they could very easily fix things themselves with suicide (EXTREME!). The next two tracks are also very good, but like I said no song compares to "Multiples Reprise [Remix]."

Without a doubt pick up the set. If you are a fan of Atmosphere's Overcast! you will definetly appreciate the first disc. And if you are a fan of hip-hop in general you will love the second disc. Thank you much.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great Stuff. I cant wait till I get Overcast, February 18, 2006

This review is from: Headshots: Se7en (Audio CD)
Wow. The first Atmosphere album I ever got was god loves ugly and immediately I was hooked. I later got Sevens travels and You cant imagine how much fun we're having. But when I was at the store I just happened to notice that they had a copy of headshots so I bought it. I Immediately put it in my Cd player and WOW!! This is probably the best atmosphere album I have heard yet. But then again I havent heard Overcast(Im gonna get it soon) but this is what hip hop is all about. Slugs crazy flow complements Ants "gift from god" beats. Definitely a must have for any rhymesayers fan

4.0 out of 5 stars classic but not perfect, January 9, 2005
This review is from: Headshots: Se7en (Audio CD)
atmosphere is with a doubt one of the most innovative groups in hip-hop. they are known for their intelligent and emotional lyrics and have appealed to many who don't especially listen to much hip-hop. the majority of tracks on this cd contradict the persona of slug revealed on his later works like seven's travel's. it is more classic hip-hop and less introspective than lucy ford. however, for those who were rockin the jams of atmos before you could buy their albums at best buy will be able to appreciate his album. slug's cynicism is still present, and his observant nature peeps its head throughout. i enjoyed this album and am glad it was released to get rid of all the posers who think seven's travels, which was without a doubt the worst thing on atmosphere's resume, is their only album. if you are an actual underground hip-hop listener, you will enjoy this album. if you heard about atmosphere via the warpped tour, you won't.
