beautiful pictures, no directions,
By R. "broid" (western USA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Headwraps: A Global Journey (Hardcover)
The book is a beautiful photo essay of headwraps from around the world. Although it shows an extensive variety of styles and forms and discusses the culture of their wearers, I had hoped that there would be some diagrams or instructions on how to duplicate some of them. There may be a sentence or two saying something like fold it in a triangle, overlap the ends, and throw the corners back but that's about it. Lovely coffee table book but not at all useful if you want to know how to copy the styles.

Gorgeous, Inspirational Picture Book,

I love this book. It is full of people from around the world, wearing the sacred crown wrap. The author Georgia Scott takes us through her own global journey. We see with her eyes and Scott shows us a wide diversity of headwraps. Clearly, Scott is very open-minded as "Headwraps: a Global Journey" presents all types of wraps including those that are religious, traditional, cultural, historical and simply costuming. The book is great for gift giving and it is basically a sumptous picture book at a very reasonable price.

A unique, highly recommended work,

Scott traveled around the world assessing headwraps of different cultures: while her book is a specialty item recommended for collections featuring in-depth cultural histories, Headwraps should not be missed by any who are interested in clothing and ethnic history. Chapters consider why women cover their heads, who wears headwraps, and the world history of the habit. Beautiful color photos accompany her travels to countries around the world. A unique, highly recommended work.

Headwrap... A Scarf By Another Name...,
By Absolutely Gorgeous "absolutely gorgeous" (Montana United States) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Headwraps: A Global Journey (Hardcover)
I agree with the other reviewers, this is a great book... a travel/journey through countries, cultures, histories and religion. And as well, I agree, that to have some diagrams for a reader to try some of the amazing wraps would have been more than fun! I think it may have been to learn exactly that - to try to do some of these wraps - is why some of us bought the book. The only other downside, is that the treatment of head wraps or head dresses in the United States (?Canada) was very very sparse. I come from a tribe that had a significant scarf/headwrap practice. As each scarf adorned paragon goes to the other side, we can measure the loss of our culture. Of course, although we (my Salish/Plateau culture group) 'traditionally' did not have woven materials until after 1850, we had some unique scarf configurations. This is an excellent book pictorially, but I want to know more.

No directions - grrr!,

The photos are indeed beautiful, but I also was disappointed by the fact that the author gives us little or no help as to how some of these creations are achieved. I mean, surely she must have asked the wearers how it's done. Perhaps a subsequent book will contain the all-important instructions...

This is a nice book. I think the author did a nice job of presenting many different cultures without much bias.

This book originally caught my attention, because I'm interested in learning how to achieve more headwrap styles. However, after reading reviews, I understood that the intent of this book was to highlight a bit of history of headwraps for people around the globe. With that in mind, I purchased the book to journey along with the author, and to learn more about why people wear headwraps as it pertains to their culture/heritage. Enjoyable!
