Excellent recording. I have an audiophile's dream stereo system and every nuance of the recording is revealed. Stands up to repeated listening. The title track, The Healer is outstanding in every regard. If you enjoy the blues, you'll love this album.

I've been waiting over twenty years to write a review of a John Lee Hooker album, just trying to catch up on all the recordings available and liking it all, diverging into all the artists whose careers Johnny Lee inspired like George Thorogood, Rolling Stones, Bonnie Raitt, Van Morrison, Fleetwood Mac, Eric Clapton, and I got lost in it all... and then in the last nine years I've been in mourning for this great great man who lived the Blues genre all his life and brought us one of the most unique sounds ever recorded to American music. You know it well, that first riff from Boom Boom Boom, it's an American icon, a symbol of our originality, our power, our voice. Oh man, what a voice. No one has ever matched Johnny Lee in raw Blues power when he yelled out "Hey-eeeh-yeah!" after the chorus and you knew the accompanying guitar player had to take it home from there. Well, after actually listening to and loving each and every one of the available John Lee Hooker recordings, I can say this is his best, infused with love from excellent accompaniment a la Carlos Santana, Bonnie Raitt, Los Lobos, George Thorogood, Robert Cray, Roy Rogers, so many others. The engineering by Sam Lehmer, Jim Gaines, Mark Lynette is superb, delicate, clean, raw. You can say clean & raw in the same phrase when you think sexy and heartfelt. You can still get a copy from collectors, very much worth pursuing. I've got two, not for sale.
