Book Description

November 1997
Who takes care of hurt wild animals? Veterinarians? Zoos? State wildlife agencies? Only wildlife rehabilitators are licensed to legally care for wild animals. Every year, they heal hundreds of thousands of sick, orphaned, and injured animals and release them back to the wild.

Learn about these unsung heroes and the incredible creatures they care for—from bats and raccoons to whales and loons. Tap into their remarkable knowledge and find out why taking wild animals home is dangerous; what to do if you find orphaned or injured wild animals; how to humanely evict critters from your home; and how to prevent common wildlife injuries.

Editorial Reviews

From Booklist

Gr. 4^-7. Jacobs' comprehensive resource takes an in-depth look at a field that many youngsters are unaware of: wildlife rehabilitation. Deforestation and destruction of their natural habitats have forced wildlife into suburban and even some urban areas, increasing the chances of interaction with humans. The author guides readers through the three-step process of helping displaced wildlife--rescue, rehabilitation, and release--then dedicates a chapter each to rehabilitating mammals and reptiles, marine animals, and birds. The remaining sections give specific advice about protecting wildlife, "wildproofing" one's home, and aiding injured or orphaned creatures. The book is jammed with real-life stories of animals and rehabilitators, black-and-white photos, drawings, and charts. Jacobs has also included an extensive section containing information on wildlife agencies, a bibliography of books and videos, and a glossary. This thorough guide will be of interest to animal lovers and also serve as a much-needed community resource. Lauren Peterson

5.0 out of 5 stars This is the book I have been looking for!, October 8, 1999
This review is from: Healers of the Wild: People Who Care for Injured and Orphaned Wildlife (Paperback)
As a volunteer wildlife rehabilitator who is very interested in education, I have been looking for the excellent educational book that both describes wildlife rehab and more importantly tells how to prevent the need for it. I had almost given up and started working on my own material when I found this book. It's wonderful! It has a wonderfully balanced perspective and should be fascinating reading at all ages. The pictures are excellent, showing both the uplifting and depressing sides of rehab. And very important, it describes a wide range of species in rehab in the US, from marine mammals to reptiles, and many of the facilities that care for them. Wildlife rehab is not a hobby to be taken lightly, the animals aren't pets, and this book does a brilliant job of teaching that.

4.0 out of 5 stars Geat book for kids and adults who care about all animals., March 11, 1999

This review is from: Healers of the Wild: People Who Care for Injured and Orphaned Wildlife (Paperback)
Shannon Jacobs shows her care and concern from the littlest creature to the biggest beast that suffers from the neverending battle between humankind and the animal kingdom. This book is a wonderful way to educate kids and grownups on what to do in a situation of finding hurt or orphaned wildlife, which is something that everyone comes into contact with at least once in their life. I am inspired to do whatever I can to help the cause, and Shannon's book is a BIG step in helping.

I can't say much more than the previous reviewers, except that I whole heartedly agree with them. This is such an excellent book, that everyone can learn something from. I am a wildlife rehabilitator, and I would personally like to thank Shannon Jacobs for writing such an informative and thorough book on the purpose and process of wildlife rehabilitation.
