4.0 out of 5 stars Good for those with chronic pain
I was recently diagnosed with mild scoliosis, and I've been searching for a yoga DVD that could help relieve my chronic back pain. I've tried several different DVDs, and was pleasantly surprised by Healing Yoga for Aches and Pains. This program is both gentle and effective, and is well suited for those with mild or moderate pain (particularly neck, back, and shoulder)...

3.0 out of 5 stars Candlelight Yoga is better...
The time for each pose is too short, you'll be busy with changing your body position rather than focus on breathing. I found Candlelight Yoga does a pretty good job on teaching breath, the movement is simple to learn and you'll feel very relaxed after you are done with it.

I was recently diagnosed with mild scoliosis, and I've been searching for a yoga DVD that could help relieve my chronic back pain. I've tried several different DVDs, and was pleasantly surprised by Healing Yoga for Aches and Pains. This program is both gentle and effective, and is well suited for those with mild or moderate pain (particularly neck, back, and shoulder). The postures are simple, but in combination with the breathing exercises, they greatly reduced my lower back pain. The instructors are very conscious of the fact that most viewers will need to go slowly, and frequently encourage you to go at your own pace. For those with previous yoga experience, this program may not be challenging enough; however, I found that if I focused on my breath and deepened the stretch, the difficulty increased. I would certainly recommend this yoga program for pain relief, especially for those new to yoga or with impaired flexibility.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great!! For those with Pain issues! Fibromyalgia, Back Pain...., February 2, 2004

While I would not reccomend this to someone who is 100% healthy but looking for an "easy" or "Beginner" tape I would, and HAVE reccomeded it to many people who, like me have issues with chronic pain!
I live with chronic pain from a condition that is currently unresoulable, but it is treatable! This is a HUGE part of my treatment! If you have trouble moving your body without pain (or even have pain when not moving) one of the best ways to help that pain is to re-teach your body correct ways to move and to gently stretch it out when it needs it.
Not only do I do this tape nearly every day ( I do have other routines that I like as well, so I switch them around a little so as not to get bored) but I also used the positions that I've learned from the tape during my day. If I feel my back or neck getting tight then I stop what I'm doing and do a few poses and the pain gets a little better. It has been an invaluable tool
Besides the 3 sections that it is broken up into at the end of the 3rd section ( they are short enough that on your good days you can do all 3 together or chjoose which you want to do by the way) there is a great relaxation that I often skip to when I feel stressed out or when I need to unwind before bed. To me it would have been worth the price just for the benefits that end relaxation has given me!
As you can tell I really can't say enough about this DVD and I can't wait to see if theor other is as good "common conditions" which I'm giving myself for a little Christmas gift.
I've had this dvd for at least 2 years I think and I would never be without it, whne people ask to borrow it I let them have it for a couple of days and then have to buy them one of their own so I can get mine back!!!! :-)
ALso to the woman with headaches, I have seen my own headaches get a lot better since using this, and when I skip it for awhile because I think that "life is too busY" to take care of myself I see them come back! You might want to try the tape for awehile and see if over a couple of weeks it helps since a lot of headaches can be because, or at the very least made worse by underlying musle tension. Also and relaxation routine always helps with any health problem and this routine is very relaxing, but also energizing too.
Good luck, I hope this helps everyone as much as it's helped me.

4.0 out of 5 stars Very well done but..., October 25, 2004
This review is from: Healing Yoga for Aches and Pains (DVD)
I've been practicing yoga with videos for some time now, and I thought that this would be a relaxing workout which would help with my frequent headaches. However, I discovered that the video is more focused towards bodily aches and pains--namely neck pain, back pain, arthritis, or injuries. For someone suffering from one of those conditions and who has only a limited range of motion, this DVD could be very useful. It is a led my a husband and wife team, Charles and Lisa Matkin, and broken into three 10 minutes sections. The first, in which Lisa demostrates and Charles provides voiceover, is a series of seated poses on a chair with a strong emphasis on breathing. Charles leads the second section with Lisa's voiceover; this section includes gentle standing postures using the chair for assistance. In the final section, Lisa again leads, this time demonstrating a series of floor poses for relaxation. Anyone who has some prior experience with yoga is likely to find these practices to be much too easy, but for those who are absolute beginners and/or those who have chronic pain, this DVD could be beneficial.

4.0 out of 5 stars Great for Fibromyalgia/Chronic Fatigue Syndrome Sufferers, January 16, 2006
This review is from: Healing Yoga for Aches and Pains (DVD)
I am extremely weak and achy due to chronic illness. While I can't (yet) do the entire video, I have found that the portion I am able to do is helpful to relieve some of my pain. It is easy enough for the weak and ill to do at least a portion of the video. I would highly recommend it for others with chronic fatigue syndrome or fybromyalgia.

After trying other "level 1-beginner" yoga tapes, I was hesitant to try another. This routine is so relaxing and gentle. I didn't have to contort my body into circ du soleil (?) positions! It is a perfect addition to the pain management program I am in for myofacial pain syndrom, fibromyalgia and TMJ disorders that have been radiating into my neck and back. I felt so relieved after using this program. I would definitely recommend this and others by these particular instructors.

5.0 out of 5 stars Wonderful tool, November 2, 2004

I bought this DVD after having sprained my back last year. I had then to stop my usual workout for a while. I've used it many times since then... every time I feel tensed or my back or joints ache, especially after a tense day at the office.
A very simple, slow, soothing, relaxing 30-mins DVD that shows many postures, from head to toe, to help one heal from chronic pain. This DVD shows modified classic yoga postures. And I regularly choose a specific posture among them, when I want to stretch a particular body part during the day or before I go to bed or when I wake up. The instructors are perfect, smooth, professional and quite skilled (looked their background on the net).
A truly good program for those of us who live a stressful and often painful life! Enjoy!

5.0 out of 5 stars A big help!, October 1, 2006
This review is from: Healing Yoga for Aches and Pains (DVD)
I developed arthritis in my knees and ankles about a decade ago when I was only 28, and over the last few years it's also moved into my hands, back, and neck. I got to the point where I tended to avoid most physical activity. Of course, this only led to weight gain and even more pain and stiffness. Several years ago I did try a standard yoga video (that I don't recall the name of), but it was just too much for my knees to take and I quit after the second day.

This DVD (Healing Yoga: Aches & Pains) actually sat on top of my TV for over a year(!) before I finally decided to give it a try. I'm so glad I did -- I've been doing it everyday for almost two weeks and I can already tell a difference! The pace and postures are, of course, tailored to those with chronic pain, but still offer some degree of challenge.

My pain isn't totally gone or anything, but there is improvement in my overall strength, flexibility, and mental focus. And prehaps more importantly, this DVD has given me the confidence to move onto something (relatively) more advanced. I definitely recommend it for anybody with arthritis or similar physical limitations.

5.0 out of 5 stars Worthwhile Overall, April 17, 2006
This review is from: Healing Yoga for Aches and Pains (DVD)
I suffer from morning stiffness in the neck & shoulders, as well as scoliosis, & have purchased many yoga tapes. For me, Healing Yoga For Aches & Pains DVD is great! The production quality is wonderful, filmed outdoors. I found the narration & background music very restful, & all the poses were achievable. You don't need a special chair or mat to follow along. As someone over 50, this DVD helps me start my day feeling better. I am ordering their other tape as well.
