From Booklist

One’s self, one’s family, and one’s community can bloom with the practice of creativity and self-expression for health and healing. Medical doctor and best-selling author Samuels and Lane, a professor, nurse, and painter, explain in great detail how to conduct their acclaimed 12-week program aimed at helping individuals, caregivers, and even troubled neighborhoods foster new perspectives and enact healthy change. They offer instructions for using anecdotes and artistic activities designed to activate both the inner artist and the inner healer and to share creative pursuits with others. With lots of background information and solid advice, Samuels and Lane elucidate the healing potentials of a variety of art forms, including music, dance, writing, and drawing, and suggest rituals and ceremonies to inspire and support creative awakenings and development. Instructions for diverse projects and exercises are accompanied by stories about people who have been healed by art. These two enthusiastic experts in the burgeoning arts-in-medicine movement guide readers toward achieving positive energy transformation and many other benefits in this practical and inspiring how-to for improving one’s physical, mental, emotional, social, and spiritual life. --Whitney Scott

"Some amazing work is being done in the field of Arts and Medicine. Healing with the Arts shares powerful stories and unique techniques for integrating the healing power of the arts into our lives." (Michael A. Singer author of The Untethered Soul)

"...through the elegance, depth and insight of Mary and Michael's writings, the reader is guided through a process that can help them unlock their most inner truth, the one that can ultimately set us free, free to be ourselves and to be fulfilled once again." (Robert Browning Healthcare Director, HeartMath)

"Healing with the Arts lays out a program of transformation through the union of creative and healing forces. This inner alchemy is a pure spiritual practice that heals us as we come into alignment with the evolutionary creative force that birthed the cosmos and is living in us now." (Alex Grey & Allyson Grey artists, cofounders of CoSM, Chapel of Sacred Mirrors; coauthors of Net of Being)

"Healing with the Arts is an exceptional guide to the power of art in deep intentional healing. Michael Samuels and Mary Rockwood Lane are leaders in the field. I recommend their book strongly." Format: Paperback
In "Healing with the Arts", Michael Samuels leads us on an invigorating journey as he teaches us how to heal our mind, body, and soul, and those of the people around us through creative expression and art.

Each of the projects covered in his twelve week course is distinctly unique and include aspects such as dance, music, visual imagery, and writing. Each stage of the course is also well structures and overall the book is laid out in an easy to read, step by step manner. Each chapter also contains a true story or anecdote about how such projects have helped other, each of them more inspiring than the previous one, which truly adds merit and credence to the book and the theories it represents.

Being new to the subject of healing through artistic expression, I was thankful that the book didn't just jump right into the 12-week course. It begins by explaining what artistic healing is, its history, and how the course was born - which makes for a friendly book to those with any skepticism, like I had. The program is flexible enough to fit anyone's life so the benefits of healing "emotionally, intellectually, and spiritually" are sure to come to you.

Since I am almost done with the 12-week course I've started to look for new books. My research has got me excited to continue with Art and Healing: Using Expressive Art to Heal Your Body, Mind, and Spirit.

Pain, and the need for healing at some time in our lives, is inescapable and intrinsic to the human condition. How miraculous that we are also uniquely gifted with abilities for creative self-expression as a vehicle to transform this pain into a greater depth and authenticity of self! Mary and Michael integrate medical anthropology and their extensive work in the study of medicine, the arts, and spirituality with many stories from their own experiences. A fascinating and captivating read on many levels, Healing with the Arts has the broadest application for any reader. Healing with the Arts, rich with testimonials and practical guidance, makes this pathway to healing accessible and inviting I have followed the authors’ work for years, and this book is one of their best. So relevant for the times in which we live!

Format: Paperback
This book is a great journey to take for either personal or professional reasons. I am a RN going for my doctorate degree as a nurse practitioner and began this journey with a goal of expanding my professional role, but ended up with a profound impact on my personal life. Also at the time, I was pregnant with my first child. Taking key points from this experience helped me prepare for my new baby boy by helping me process the emotions and fully engaging the pregnancy. I also took the opportunity to make a stronger connection with my mother by using different art forms to understand each other better. Now that the baby is here, I find myself using points from the book to use art in my life to process things that happen. Overall, this was a wonderful experience that I would not trade for anything!

I loved reading the stories of people tapping into their creative sides. It inspired me to write more and try new modalities. The 12 week program is great in it's flexibility and ability to keep you engaged. I highly recommend this book to anyone who is feeling stagnant in their creativity and needing time for self care.
