  • Cut Marks Heal in Seconds ⇒ Each cutting mat consists of 15 layers of pure self-healing compound, so cuts heal faster and mats stay smooth for longer. Our mats are at least 17% ~ 35% heavier than those by Alvin, Olfa or Fiskars due to the higher mat density created by our proprietary manufacturing process
  • Stays flat, Won't Warp or Crack ⇒ Our craft cutting mats are made of sturdy, refined material that can withstand direct sunlight and will quickly recover even if not stored flat. Most multi-layer or thin mats can warp easily due to impurities in the material reacting differently to temperature and bending
  • Certified Safe & Odorless ⇒ Compliant with EN 71-3, the newest European safety standards concerning Heavy Metals present in products children may come in contact with. We also eliminated VOCs so your mat won't stink up your room and there's no chemical residue left on your fabric and paper
  • In Inches & cm, Double Sided ⇒ Our mats have both Imperial and Metric guides printed (one per side; see image #4), and we ensure the grid lines are Accurate to help you measure and line up material easily
  • Size A1 ⇒ Recommended as the first mat for a beginning quilter, if table space isn't an issue - You only need to fold yardage once and thus avoid cutting the ugly 'dog leg' (grids: 24"x36"; thickness:0.1" or more; cutter & ruler Not included)

Caution: Some Cutting Mats Are a Health Hazard!
Cutting mats made with untreated material (i.e. Chinese imports) are usually laden with toxic heavy metals and VOCs that can cause a variety of health issues...

Even buying a name brand mat is not without problems:
* some don't heal cuts as advertised, leaving cut marks after a single use
* some off gas strong chemical odor, causing headache and asthma
* some warp or crack easily - even indoor heat can damage the mat due to impurities in material
* ... because most are now made in China too!

I am a quilter so I have a number of rotary cutting mats in various sizes, I can't imagine quilting without my rotary mats and my rotary cutter. Most of my mats are self-healing Olfa mats. They have a life span of about 4-5 years of frequent use. Eventually they lose the self-healing properties. CalibreArt Mats are noticeably thicker than any of my other mats. In my video I show one of my Olfa mats next to CalibreArt Mat so you can see the difference.

My Olfa mats have markings on one side and are plain green on the other side. CalibreArt Mats have inch markings on one side and centimeter markings on the other side. Even though centimeter are not useful for me to quilting, they are useful when I just need to lay fabric on a straight line. I find double sided mat more useful than having a totally unlined side like Olfa mats.

One of Olfa mats does not lay flat, it has a bit of a wave which presses down when I cut. CalibreArt mat is much thicker and heavier, it lays totally flat. Calibre mat's thickness (measured with a digital calliper) is 0.115". Olfa mat's thickness is 0.062".

I got the large size (24" x 36") it covers almost my entire sewing table and it really makes cutting easier, I do not have to reposition and move the fabric. This is a very nice mat!

Can anything be improved? Yes. My Olfa mats show the measurements on all 4 sides of the mat. CalibreArt mat shows numbers only on the left and bottom. Sometimes the fabric covers the bottom and left side and it is harder the tell the measurements. It is a minor nit but I am including it in hope that the manufacturer is reading reviews and might make this great mat even better in the future.

Update 2/28/15: Manufacturer contacted to let me know that they will add additional measurement markers for these mats. Nice to hear when manufacturer is so responsive to customer suggestions.

This mat is provided by Calibre Art Cutting Mat.

My wife has been seriously into scrapbooking, card-making, and other related handicrafts for many years, and she's become very expert at it. She has regular meetings with craft groups like Creative Memories and Stampin' Up, and over the years, she's accumulated a large collection of specialized tools and equipment for this kind of work. When I asked her if she wanted to try using a Calibre Art self-healing cutting mat, she was very happy to oblige. Here's what she had to say after using the mat:

"With the cutting mats that I've used in the past, I have considered them as a consumable item, like paper. Eventually there would be so many cut marks on the mat that I would just throw out the old one and buy a new one. The Calibre Art cutting mat is promoted as self-healing, where cut marks would disappear within minutes. I scoffed at the idea, but I must admit that I was amazed to learn how well it worked. I deliberately made many cuts in the mat with my X-Acto knife. At first you could see and feel the cuts. I then gently rubbed them with my finger and set the mat aside. When I checked later, there were no cuts that I could see or feel. I did make one intentionally deep cut which took a while to disappear, but it eventually did go away. When you are card making or scrapbooking, you are generally cutting through other paper thickness and do not make deep cuts in the mat itself. The cushioning of the mat surface insures that your cuts will be clean and completely through the paper or cardstock without having to cut again. The feel and weight of the mat is very pleasing, and I appreciate the grid markings that help keep everything straight. The angle markings are a new addition to a cutting mat for me. If you work in inches primarily, there is a side for you.

I learned to quilt as a little girl at my Grandma's knee. Until recently you would rarely find me out and about without a baggie full of the bits & pieces to make a new patchwork square in my purse. (I never go anywhere without something to read and something to do.) But when I moved to Vermont a few years back there simply was no room in my tiny cabin for my quilting stash, so it stayed in storage until last October when my eldest granddaughter came for a visit. Here in my new place I do have room for that stash - a huge walk-in closet - and one of the things that we did was unpack all those boxes I'm no longer allowed to lift and dig out the stash of quilting fabrics. My old cutting mat was a bit sad, so I was delighted to be offered the opportunity to try this Self Healing Cutting Mat from Calibre Art.

The mat comes in a sturdy, resealable ziplock bag that you can use to keep the mat clean while in storage. The 18 x 24 mat has a marked surface area of 22 x 16 in 1/2-inch divisions on one side, with metric measurements on the other, plenty large enough to handle nearly all cotton fabrics just as they come off the bolt, with only a single fold. (No more folding fabric in quarters or eighths to fit it onto the mat!) Both sides have marked angle line to help with cutting geometrics.

The mat is self healing and absolutely odorless. What surprised me the most, however, is the thickness of the mat in comparison to those currently available in local stores.
