5.0 out of 5 stars A Very Balanced View
I guess if I had one word to describe this book on treating depression naturally, I would say it was balanced. It is based upon Ayurveda, which is a traditional mind-body medicine in India- the main theme here being that nature and the mind-body are aspects of a single continuum of intelligence. But whether you buy into that or not, it makes little difference, because the...

2.0 out of 5 stars You Can Do Better
If, like me, you struggle with depression, you can do much better than this book.

First and foremost, I must say that I find the authors' endorsement of the Transcendental Meditation religious-organization/movement/cult to be most disappointing.

Transcendental is merely one of many forms of mantra meditation. Most can be learned for free via...

I guess if I had one word to describe this book on treating depression naturally, I would say it was balanced. It is based upon Ayurveda, which is a traditional mind-body medicine in India- the main theme here being that nature and the mind-body are aspects of a single continuum of intelligence. But whether you buy into that or not, it makes little difference, because the book has some great strategies for treating depression, addressing such issues as...

-meditation
-how you breathe
-exercise
-yoga
-sleep
-what you eat

As you can see, a lot of areas are covered, which are bound to help a lot of people. So, if you're looking for natural solutions for depression, I'd have to say that this is a very good place to start. For readers wanting to know more on how to specifically use exercise to treat their depression, I can also recommend Exercise Beats Depression as a good resource. Good Luck!

5.0 out of 5 stars Most Practical Book in Ayurveda, April 10, 2009
This review is from: Healing Depression the Mind-Body Way: Creating Happiness with Meditation, Yoga, and Ayurveda (Paperback)
BRAVO to Dr. Nancy Liebler and Sandra Moss for the most practical, yet in-depth, how-to-book I have read on the application of natural healing modalities for depression. I especially appreciate the direct language used in explaining the application of Ayurveda for mental health. The authors did not insulate themselves through the language of Ayurveda, as so often I have seen in other books of that discipline, but wrote in undertandable language to make the book most readable for the general audience. As a Psychologist for almost 30 years, I can assure you this book is on the top of my list for recommended reading to my patients. It is one we all want to have on our coffee table as a constant reference.

I read this- or most of it- while standing in a bookstore. I have not slept without sleeping pills for two years. I was feeling sort of frantic after two particularly anxiety filled nights and went to the bookstore to unwind.

I read this book and put tiny amounts of it into practice that evening. I fell asleep early and fast and without drugs and only woke up once because I was LAUGHING!! I don't know, but I am sipping my hot water and feeling mighty fine about it. Certainly worth looking at!

I found the subject matter very enlightening and fascinating. So did a friend that I shared the book with. I found the type of depression that I had in the book. It was very helpful in my recovery from mental illness.

Nancy Liebler and Sandra Moss have collaborated to write a prescription for the malaise affecting millions of us in these most trying times. Healing Depression The Mind-Body Way, is a practical guide to creating happiness and warding off the clouds of depression and anxiety. The book provides a useful "how-to" --- following some very basic and common sense steps that are based on practical medicine and universal truths and methods that have been developed and vetted over centuries. The mind-body way isn't gimmicky, mystical nor doctrinal. Rather, it is a step-by-step guide to mental and physical health and well-being, written for the masses. This is a must read for anyone interested in the subject or desiring to overcome the chains of depression.

5.0 out of 5 stars Healing Depression the Mind-Body Way: Creating Happiness with Meditation, Yoga, and Ayurveda, March 26, 2011
This review is from: Healing Depression the Mind-Body Way: Creating Happiness with Meditation, Yoga, and Ayurveda (Paperback)
I do not suffer from depression, but found this book to be interesting and insightful. It offers many simple techniques for adding mindfulness and balance to your life. Reading this could help you avoid depression, stay healthy, and enable you to understand and perhaps guide others who suffer from the disease. I have been a fitness instructor for 30 yrs, including yoga teaching for 10, and found all the info on fitness, yoga, and nutrition to be accurate and current. I will recommend this book to my colleagues, as well as students and clients without hesitation. And will refer to the many dog-eared pages often.

5.0 out of 5 stars living a better life, June 4, 2009

As a therapist, I am always looking for books that will help my patients find new insights about themselves and better ways to deal with toxic stress in their lives. Dr. Nancy Liebler and Sandra Moss's book is an ideal resource. It is a very readable application of the ancient wisdom of Ayurveda medicine to the problem of depression. I found their delineation of the three types of depression and the subsequent discussion of particular healing approaches to each one, illuminating. Beyond that, the authors offer many extremely useful suggestions about ways to create inner peace and well being by integrating Yoga, proper breathing techniques, meditation and diet. This book is not only about healing depression, it is about living a better life!

5.0 out of 5 stars Goes to the roots of Yoga, May 18, 2009
This review is from: Healing Depression the Mind-Body Way: Creating Happiness with Meditation, Yoga, and Ayurveda (Paperback)
As a Yoga Instructor I was interested in the authors' prescriptive Yoga poses for healing depression and I was not disappointed. Their unique approach links ayurveda and yoga as it originated in the ancient texts. Like the entire book, this chapter is well organized, easy to understand and logical. I bought several copies to give to a number of students who have asked about yoga therapy for depression.

5.0 out of 5 stars Highly Recommend, May 15, 2009
This review is from: Healing Depression the Mind-Body Way: Creating Happiness with Meditation, Yoga, and Ayurveda (Paperback)
If drugs and talk-therapy have failed you -- buy this book. I'm wary of overwhelming programs requiring a complete re-vamping of ones life. Lieber and Moss provide a very practical, realistic, helpful system that one can easily integrated to regain balance. I had a great time assessing my imbalances (and my friends!) with the mind-body questionnaire as well. EXCELLENT read.
