Book Description

January 1, 1979 Exploration Book
At some time during our lives, each of us will be called to be with a person who is dying. Whether this event takes place in a hospital, hospice, or at home, whether the dying person is a friend, relative or parishioner, we are called to be present to the person and help the dying person be released for death. How can we be with those who are ready to die?

Using the seven final acts and words of Jesus, the authors show what is needed for dying as a healed and whole person. Barbara Shlemon, well known for her work in the healing ministry, says of Healing the Dying: "This will be extremely useful to members of the medical profession, priests, religious and others concerned with pastoral care of the sick. Anyone who has ever grieved for a loved one will find consolation within these pages." Margaret A. Schlientz, Assistant Professor of Psychiatric Nursing at Marquette University, praises Healing the Dying for its "simplicity and gentleness. With prayer and a listening heart, the Linns help release the dying to see the face of the Father."

Jesuit Fathers Matthew and Dennis Linn work full-time in a healing ministry. They are nationally-known speakers and authors whose publications include Healing of Memories, Healing Life's Hurts (both Paulist Press™) and To Heal As Jesus Healed (Ave Maria Press), on which they collaborated with Barbara Shlemon. Mary Jane Linn, C.S.J., is a registered nurse who holds a post-master's degree in psychiatric mental health from the University of California at Berkeley. She is a member of her cousin's healing ministry team, gives retreats and workshops and is pastoral minister to the members of her community who are in retirement at Bethany Convent in St. Paul, Minnesota.

5.0 out of 5 stars Prepare to Die with Jesus to Live with Him in a common sense way, March 12, 2010

Dennis Lynn, Matthew and Sr. Mary Jane Lynn do and excellent job of providing an outline for a common sense approach to death as Jesus died. Try it; you'll like it. It is a very practical way to get your bags packed to take the journey with Jesus across the great divide.

5.0 out of 5 stars Extremely wise and moving, November 18, 2006

This review is from: Healing the Dying (Exploration Book) (Paperback)
I bought this book after I found myself in tears just browsing through it, and I'm not even facing the death of a loved one. This is a simple little book by a Catholic nun who had a ministry of "releasing" people (mainly fellow members of her religious order) to die, like a death midwife, or a gifted spiritual director for those in their final hours. The stories she tells are enlightening, the meditations for personal reflection on one's own life are very nicely done, and she clearly had fine insight into what people need to be able to die peacefully. But it's often the glimpses we get of her bedside manner that are the most special, she is perfectly humble in the way she tells the stories but I developed a real admiration for this gentle Sister. The depth and richness of her prayer life is very evident.

The basic insights of this book are applicable to anybody, but it would be especially valuable to devout Christians (and not only Catholics). It would be a great read for people facing down their own mortality, as well as loved ones and caregivers. I'm not really in any of those categories and I still found this book personally rewarding.

Super book using the last hours Christ was on the cross as the pattern for helping a dying person finish life "healed"! It details how to settle business that is unfinished and therefore die in peace.
