More About the Author

Esly Regina Carvalho, Ph.D. is a Brazilian-American clinical psychologist and author, as well as a presenter in great demand internationally. Having been raised in the US, she also lived in Ecuador and Bolivia, besides her native Brazil, which has led her to be perfectly fluent in English, Portuguese and Spanish.

Esly has been committed to integrating different fields in a way that is helpful to both laypeople as well as professionals in a hands-on kind of way. In the field of Psychodrama, she has written a Manual in Spanish, published a compendium of professionals articles on Sociodrama and Sociometry, and more recently, integrated EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing) with Role Therapy, resulting in her book, Healing the Folks Who Live Inside, available in paperback and kindle, in all three languages. Her Bibliodrama Manual integrates techniques from Psychodrama with Bible stories.

Integrating Psychotherapy with principles of Biblical counseling led her to write several books in Spanish and Portuguese on topics such as divorce and remarriage (Single Again, When the Bond Breaks, available in Spanish and Portuguese, Cuando se rompe el vínculo), emotional healing (Alas de sanidad), leadership (Cuidemos nuestros líderes in Spanish and Portuguese)and marriage (Hacer el amor en todo lo que se hace).

Also available are books integrating emotional growth and Biblical principles (Caderno de Oração, Compañeros de yugo, Jogos Dramáticos para Cristãos), available in Spanish and Portuguese.

Originally trained in Psychodrama and Group Psychotherapy in Brazil, Esly passed her exams with the American Board of Examiners in Psychodrama and Sociometry, with distinction, and is a Fellow of the American Society of Group Psychotherapy and Psychodrama (ASGPP).

Having begun her EMDR training in 1996, she is presently a Trainer of Trainers (EMDR Institute) and Past-President of EMDR Ibero-America (EMDR IBA, 2007-2010;2010-2013). She maintains a private practice (TraumaClinic) in Brasilia, Brazil, and has been directly responsible for the training of over fifteen hundred EMDR therapists in Brazil alone.

Check out other books she has written in the list below. The list is constantly growing, so check back regularly.

Dr Carvalho has taken the concepts of dissociation and the emotional parts of an individual's personality, which have so often been minimized, marginalized, or simply misunderstood in mental health treatment, and normalizes their historic experiences as factors and influences that have both supported, as well as limited, people at many stages of life. She describes the process of personal growth across the lifespan in the same variable way most of us experience it --not as a linear trajectory without pause -- but by stages, some smooth and strong, others as a struggle from which little immediate growth or purpose can be seen. That is until additional growth and subsequent therapy allows the connection and emergence of the Folks Inside.

Dr Cavalho's clear descriptions of her clinical application of EMDR avoids the too often pedantic recitation of process some other EMDR books subside into. Her clinical vignettes convey the ease with which long-troubling behavioral histories can be resolved while never failing to acknowledge the trauma the individual experienced as the precursor.

Both clinician and client will benefit from the wisdom contained by the Folks Who Live Inside.

As someone who has long struggled with his own "inner child" I found this book gave me permission to embrace parts of myself that I usually ignore. Esly has a way of unpacking concepts that can sometimes be an impediment to this way of understanding people - for example I appreciate her explaining that the inner children are not real people and that roles emerge to deal with unresolved trauma and also as a result of our relationships with others
Esly's genuine affection and regard for the inner child shines through in her writing, but this is also a practical book which will help you embrace more of who you are. Highly recommended.

Dr. Carvalho has written a wonderful work that explains, in plain terms, why people act the way they do in certain life situations. She has taken ego state theory and explained it so that anyone can understand what is going on to cause certain behaviors. In particular, she states very well, what happens to a person who cannot seem to move past certain points in their lives. I particularly appreciate how she uses case vignettes from her past patients to show how her work of incorporating EMDR with the ego state theory to help them to heal from their past lives and be able to move on to greater success! Her techniques can also be used with other therapeutic modalities successfully. Understanding the inner parts (Especially those that were hurt) that we all have will help us in our struggle to achieve fulfillment in our adult lives!

This is a great read for anyone, not just those in the healing professions!

With a profound honesty, she takes us into an inner journey of reconnaissance and a desire of acceptance. Her language is simple, yet engaging.

I recommend reading this book both to the EMDR specialists (like myself) and the everyday person in search for answers to every day questions: who am i? why do i sometimes feel this way? why do i sometimes act this way? how CAN i change?

Bravo Esly!!!!

This book is enjoyable to read, easy to understand and has a very clear explanation on our various internal roles and on the new reprocessing techniques that are 'revolutionizing' the psychoterapy field. Nice for both professionals and laypeople.
I really enjoyed it!

If you are a therapist who has an interest in Internal Family Systems as well as EMDR, this is a wonderful book. While the author uses the nomenclature of psychodrama, i.e. "roles", it is easily transferable to IFS and parts work. Would highly recommend if you are either an EMDR therapist or IFS therapist who is interested in integrating the other into your clinical work.
