This book has some really good information and good recipes in it. The first half of the book breaks down what each food is good for healthwise and tips on how to use it. It also includes some nice pictures with the recipes, as well as with the individual grains and other foods. Each recipe has it's own page and at the top of the page under the title of the recipe it lists why this particular meal is good for you.

However, the nutrition values are not included. Since I am diabetic, I definitely need this information in order to count sugar, carbs, etc., that are in a meal. For my particular situation, I was very disappointed that this was missing and is why I am only giving it 3 stars. Otherwise, I would have given it 5 stars.

For those of you who do not need nutrition counts, it is a great book with lots of healthy meals. It is not only a cookbook, but a combination of healhy recipes with healthy foods. Those of you who are concerned with diet will find the recipes in this book a healthy way to eat..

A few years ago, I had stumbled on a book highlighting the benefits of certain vegetables and fruits for people dealing with cancer. I personally don't have cancer but I thought it was a good idea to have written a book on the benefits of healthy vegetables to help fight a sickness that is rampant. Imagine my delight when I saw a book in the new DK catalogue on healing foods. Healthy eating can be beneficial for numerous sickness and ailments.

The table of contents is easy to follow and well organized. The first section of the book deals with the kind of foods that heal (fruits, vegetables, nuts, seeds and sprouts, medicinal herbs, culinary herbs, cereals and grains, dried beans, spices, fats and oils, fermented foods, meats, oily fish, other foods like algae, seaweeds, and so on) while the second part of the book will highlight special recipes that will help you to heal various ailments you might have. Now please keep in mind that though this book can suggest food that can help with healing, I wouldn't suggest that you strictly use it for complete healing. I believe that it is wise to follow your doctor's advices if you deal with a difficult illness. However, I do believe that eating healthy will help the process of healing.

The book also highlight the dietary benefits for different health areas for the food and recipes presented in it. Consequently, you will see special icons that will inform you how the food and recipes can help you. The icons are for heart and circulation, digestion, urinary, respiratory, detox, metabolic balance, immune support, energy boost, muscles and joints, skin and hair, mind and emotions, eye health, men's health and women's health.

This is a great book that will teach you about food, how each item benefits your body, how to eat it, and suggested ways to cook it with other things. I love the detail, I love the suggested recipes, and I love the beginning section about what is real food and will nourish your body, versus all the garbage out there that most people eat. I've been juicing and eating more raw foods and trying to get the majority of my calories from foods such as those detailed in this book and I feel amazing! I wish everyone had the knowledge that this book will give you. It's fantastic!

This is absolutely a beautiful book. I love the layout. The colors and illustrations are superb. A look at the table of contents shows the foods listed in different groups, like orchard fruits, berries, citrus fruits, etc. Then the same with vegetables, fruiting and flowering vegetables, leafy vegetables, bulbs and stems, roots and tubers, fungi and nuts. There is a section on seeds and sprouts, medicinal herbs, cereals and grains, fermented foods, meats, fish and so on. In each section and subsection the individual foods are listed with a photo of each food.

Then we are told what each food is good for, how to get the best from it, and how to use it.There are also other listed facts like if it lowers blood pressure, or if it has a cleansing action on the body. It is laid out much like a food encyclopedia and the pictures of the foods are in color and quite good.

The second half of the book is called Recipes that heal. Included are menus for various disorders, such as an example of a heart healthy day, or a day of men's health, menu's for eye health, or women's health. Then come the recipes. They include things like fresh cilantro leaf pesto with pasta, vegetable hot pot, lamb cassarole with vegetables, fresh fig delight with pear and red wine sauce. I appreciate the section on tea recipes with sleep tea, warming tea,and deep nurture tea. The recipes look delicious and inviting as well as being very healthy.

I love food and good cooking and this book shows that good cooking can also be both healthful and appetizing. This book is a must have for anyone who is into healthful cookery. It is sure to please the foodies in your life and satisfy their appetites as well. -- Valerie Lull, Author, Ten Healthy Teas.
