4.0 out of 5 stars A most insightful book on charisms and inner healing

2.0 out of 5 stars Borrows more from metaphysics than Pentecostal/Charismatic theology
Though some Charismatics have found this book insightful, I found it very lacking. The author leans less on Pentecostal/Charismatic theology and more on what appears to be metaphysics with maybe some New Thought.

Her treatment of the 9 Charismatic Gifts was lacking and went in a different direction than Classical Pentecostalism. Her thoughts on tongues were...

4.0 out of 5 stars A most insightful book on charisms and inner healing, June 20, 1999

This review is from: The Healing Gifts of the Spirit (Paperback)
Agnes Sanford was an Episcopal lay woman, married to an Episcopal priest. She has been active in the Church in the area of healing way before the charismatic renewal set in. In this book she explains how the charisms of 1Cor.12 can be used specifically for inner healing. At the same time she also explains them in such a way that they can be used for spiritual growth as well. Special attention is given to depression. Agnes knows the depth of mental suffering, and knows a way out too! In her defence it must be said that she cannot be connected to New Age or other forms of occultism. in this book, she gives a very usefull presentation of discerning the spirits, and also a useful presentation of deliverance from evil spirits! Agnes stands with both her feet in the christian tradition, and is a great inspiration for christian living, a great teacher, and in my opinion a saint as well. She has effectively changed my life for the better, given me a better understanding of the nature of God, and His salvation. Agnes gives a way to live the sacramental life fully integrated with a charismatic spirituality. Yet non-sacramental churches (like Pentecostals and Evangelicals)can also benefit greatly from this woman of God. I say this as a former Pentecostal, who is now a (charismatic) Roman Catholic!

The books by Agnes Sanford, including "The Healing Gifts of the Spirit" save me from despondency over my relationship with God and people. I read "The Healing Light in my early 20's and it turned my life around. She, once again makes God' desires real for me.

I was looking for some encouragement around the area of praying for healing, and I got it.The Author brings to light the relationship I have with the Holy Spirit and His power to heal through me. It was good for me to be reminded of the truth of 1Jn 4:4, 1Cor. 3:16, and Eph. 1:19:20. That the One who lives in me is grater than any power in this world, that the Holy Spirit does live in me and that the same power that raised Jesus from the dead is available to me in this present time.

5.0 out of 5 stars Invaluable resource in understanding the Spirit, July 2, 2007

This review is from: The Healing Gifts of the Spirit (Paperback)
I know of no other book that gives as clear an understanding of the more "mysterios" gifts of the spirit. I am not a "carasmatic" but through understanding, this book removes any fear I may have had and in fact installs a longing to experience more of the Spirit.

The Healing Gifts of the Spirit by Agnes Sanford is a must read for those who want to understand how much the Lord loves us and wants to establish a close relationship with us. Agnes Sanford writes from the heart and from personal experience. No drama and loud music is necessary for us to experience the Lord's presence, peace and healing. Agnes explains the gifts and how to use the gifts correctly. She taught Francis McNutt, who in turn taught Nigel Mumford. Their type of ministry is based on humility, quiet meditation, and perseverance in prayer. The explanation of soaking prayer is particularly relevant to prayer teams that are open to improving their ministry. The healing gifts of the Holy Spirit continue today. Those christians that deny that the gifts exist today, miss the gifts. Those christians that acknowledge that the gifts continue to this day, are blessed by the gifts. Agnes Sanford shows us those blessings.

2.0 out of 5 stars Borrows more from metaphysics than Pentecostal/Charismatic theology, December 26, 2011

Her thoughts on tongues were devaluing.

The author appears to rest some Catholic Mysticism which is very different than what I was looking for.

Some may like it but I found it lacking biblically.
