5.0 out of 5 stars The most valuable book I've read on weight issues.
I found this book to be as insightful as it is practical.Going beyond the surface issues of weight loss, this book offers a process of steps which stimulate a new way of thinking and asks questions which are probing and to the point. This is the kind of book I refer to again and again. A small group of friends and I use this book as the basis for our weekly discussions...

3.0 out of 5 stars It might work and then again it might not...
I have to say that this book did not help me. I'm not sure why exactly it failed, but perhaps I have only to look no further than my own incurable compulsion with food. Fortunately I was able to have life saving surgery to reduce the size of my stomach. It did, however, still leave me with the same compulstion to eat which I struggle with.

However, the idea of this...

This is the kind of book I refer to again and again. A small group of friends and I use this book as the basis for our weekly discussions and assignments, and it has provided the well-rounded and holistic approach we were looking for. We are at long last making great strides to resoving the issues which caused the problem in the first place. I recommend it highly!

5.0 out of 5 stars A Great Workbook, July 2, 1998

"Healing the Hungry Self" is a great workbook because it asks tough questions while giving valuable information. If followed as the author intended, there is a reading "assignment" and writing "assignment" each day for six weeks. The advice is practical without being too preachy. I got a lot out of this book. I reccomend it for anyone with a food problem.

This book helped me a lot. There is some self assesment tests and I scored in the critical area- my bad habits with overeating have changed my life for the worse and this book helped me look inside and heal whats wrong. If you want to stop abusing your body, and you dont know how to stop, this workbook will be a lifesaver.

After struggling with food issues for years, I finally couldn't take it anymore. I was looking for a book that could help me get to the root of my problems, and this was it! "Healing the Hungry Self" helped me identify my problems and learn to deal with them without turning to food. I'm really a completely changed person after reading this book--it was exactly the help I needed when I was really ready to make some changes in my life. I'd recommend it highly to anyone who is sick and tired of fighting with themselves over food and is really motivated to make a change in their life.

5.0 out of 5 stars If you have a problem with emotional eating..get this book, January 21, 2009

I bought this book based on the reviews of the other Amazon readers. I had to buy it used and there was writing in the first few pages, which would have normally turned me off immediately, but this book is something special.
It may be a bit dated in some of the phrasing, but the information in it is as needed today as when it was written. The daily exercises are invaluable and will help someone with binging, anorexia, grazing or other eating problems, really stop and think about what is going on inside.
I hope that this book is either republished or updated. It's a fantastic workbook...wish I could give it more than 5 stars.

Fortunately I was able to have life saving surgery to reduce the size of my stomach. It did, however, still leave me with the same compulstion to eat which I struggle with.

However, the idea of this book is a very good one and it just may help you. You have to be willing to work on yourself and you should make that comittment before you read any further or decide to purchase this book. The author seems rather vague in areas in explaining her theories and how they might be applied o anyone else. Tragically, a recent NIH study reveals that only 5% of people who Diet to loose weight are able to keep it off permanently. Therefore, a Diet-free solution is not only convenient, but I believe, neccessary. Perhaps for me a re-read of this book is in order now that I've lost 65 lbs.
