Book Description

1845280369 978-1845280369 October 28, 2005 2nd
In this revised, expanded, and deeply compelling second edition, Jan Sutton draws on the testimonies of those trapped in the cycle of self-injury, and former self-injurers, as well as the latest research and developments in the field. It is a book of hope and healing designed to offer help and support to self-injurers; understanding to the self-injurer's kith and kin; and insight to volunteers or professionals whose work brings them into contact with people who hurt themselves. It's a perplexing behavior with many names - self-injury, self-harm, self-mutilation, self-inflicted violence, self-cutting and self-abuse to name some. It's a puzzling and perplexing phenomenon, which shocks and frightens those who encounter it. Furthermore, it's widely reported to be reaching 'epidemic proportions', particularly among young people, and research has shown that it frequently goes hand-in-hand with eating disorders, alcohol and drug abuse, depression, post-traumatic stress disorder, and dissociative disorders. Those caught in its clutches find it difficult to stop because of its addictive nature, or are reluctant to try because they say it helps them 'feel better,' 'more in control,' 'more alive or real,' or that it inhibits suicidal thoughts.

Editorial Reviews

Review

'A ground-breaking book in the subject material and presentation. It's easy to read, yet helps the reader understand the complex nature of self-harm. The life stories are authentic and incredibly moving.' William Stewart, author of A-Z of Counselling: Theory and Practice 'Many people struggle with more than one self destructive coping mechanism...which makes Sutton's views especially interesting. Great to have a British list of contacts and resources, and wonderful to have a book that informs and doesn't condescend.' Reader review - Amazon '...an ideal book for those who self injure, particularly those who also have an eating disorder or alcohol problem. Sutton deals with what is a delicate subject with great sensitivity...this is a book that could change lives. Reader review - Amazon

From the Back Cover

It’s a perplexing phenomenon with many names – self-injury, self-harm, self-mutilation, self-inflicted violence, self-cutting, and self-abuse to name some. Those who come across it – family members, friends, supporters – even many professionals – struggle to understand why people do it, and find the behaviour disturbing and puzzling. Recent reports imply that it is reaching ‘epidemic proportions,’ particularly among young people. Furthermore, research suggests that it is a frequent companion to eating disorders, alcohol and drug abuse, depression, posttraumatic stress disorder, borderline personality disorder, and dissociative disorders. Those caught in its clutches claim that it is difficult to stop due to its highly addictive nature, or say they are reluctant to try because it helps them ‘feel better,’ ‘more in control,’ ‘more real,’ or simply ‘it keeps them alive.’

In this revised, expanded, and compelling second edition, the author steps beyond the wounds and scars of self-injury to listen to the words of women and men who engage in the practice. She draws on personal testimonies and creative works of individuals trapped in the self-injury and food misuse cycle, those who support them, and people who have stopped self-injuring – as well as on research data and the latest developments in the field.

It is a book of hope, healing, courage, and enlightenment – not just for those who self-injure or self-harm and their supporters, it is a must-read for everyone concerned with the growing issue of self-injury.

5.0 out of 5 stars Jan Sutton's Second Edition, January 19, 2006

This review is from: Healing the Hurt Within: Understand Self-Injury and Self-Harm, and Heal the Emotional Wounds (Paperback)
Jan Sutton has been a leading advocate for better understanding and treatment of self-injury. She maintains two websites in the U.K. that provide many helpful suggestions and also assist caregivers. The second edition of this book has an attractive cover consisting of artwork by a self-injurer in recovery. Beyond the cover, the book clearly differentiates suicide from self-injury. It also provides many useful suggestions as to how to overcome self-injury. The book is informal in style and is unique in that it gives an equal voice to self-injurers themselves. The book is interspersed with many autobiographical statements, poems, and artwork from self-injurers. Jan Sutton's compassion and respect for self-injurers is clear throughout the book.

I highly recommend this book for self-injurers, their significant others, and helping professionals.
