From the Author

Notes from the author of "Healing the Hyperactive Brain":

"Healing the Hyperactive Brain: Through the New Science of Functional Medicine" is a book that I have written in response to the desperate cries of so many parents who want to help their children without resorting to Ritalin or other worrisome drugs. This book is intended to provide guidance to parents and adult ADHD sufferers, enabling them to become knowledgeable and proactive in the management of this troublesome condition.

An ever-growing number of parents, teachers and healthcare professionals are demanding safer and better answers for this disturbing and potentially destructive condition. "Healing the Hyperactive Brain" was written to address this need. It is based on my work as a medical researcher and medical educator in the field of ADHD as well as the work of forward thinking researchers and clinicians from around the world. Additionally, this book is biographical as I describe the methods I have used to uncover the causes of ADHD in my own life and my son's life and how I have managed to turn this condition into an important asset in our lives.

"Healing the Hyperactive Brain" is the most comprehensive book ever written about the many factors contributing to attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). It is also an organized and authoritative presentation of the effective, drug-free approach, which is now being taught to healthcare professionals around the world. This approach to managing ADHD:

Carries no risk of doing harm and is free of unpleasant side effects.

Improves ADHD symptoms as well as the person's overall function and quality of life.

Helps to correct the underlying causes of the disorder rather than just suppressing symptoms.

Improves the long-term prognosis for the individual with ADHD.

This book is easily understood by the layperson and yet it is comprehensive enough that physicians wishing to explore science-based, drug-free alternatives will find it to be a valuable resource.

In the first section:

The neurology underlying ADHD is explained in a simple and practical manner, helping the reader to understand how the ADHD affected brain is "wired".

In the second section:

Risk factors that set the stage for the development of ADHD are examined (genetic, nutritional, toxicological and psychological).

In section three:

Breakthrough scientific findings from our research center and from other centers around the world are presented to demonstrate the many correctable physiological problems that have been found to occur in those with ADHD, and how these physiological problems can affect the brain.

The fourth section:

Describes in understandable terms advanced methods for evaluating the individual with ADHD in order to clarify the various social, psychological, toxicological and physiological problems that have led to their specific problems.

Section five:

Includes ten chapters that describe in detail a strategy for treating ADHD, which is comprehensive, drug-free and highly effective.

Finally, section six:

Is a concise summary of the principles outlined in the book but written in a more technical style so that a healthcare professional can gain an understanding of the basic elements of this program in less than one hour. The intent of this last section is so that people can lend this book to their doctor who can quickly become competent to work with them in this drug-free approach to treating ADHD.

4.0 out of 5 stars ADD, ADHD and Holistic Approaches to Healing these Condition, April 15, 2000
By A Customer
This review is from: Healing the Hyperactive Brain : Through the New Science of Functional Medicine (Paperback)
Michael Lyon's new book could be a great reference for anyparent with an ADHD child, or any adult who feels they may have thiscondition and wants a thorough, well-researched account of what causes a "hyperactive brain," its pros and cons, plus how to live best with such a condition. For anyone knowledgable about alternative health methods that use diet, meditation, herbs and exercise, much of the information will not be new. Yet even for the most well-versed folks on these topics, Lyon offers plenty of useful insights into both the science behind ADHD and a wide range of holistic ideas for how to treat it. This is not a fancy book. It could probably be shorter and say the same things. Still, it's a very useful guide. What I like best is how, even if you lived out in the boondocks where every doctor you knew said that drugs are the only approach to ADD or ADHD symptoms, this book would arm you with viable alternatives, and how to contact people who can help you try them. Lyon also deserves credit for sharing his personal stories--about his own battles with ADHD, and those of his gifted son, plus an intriguing perspective that drugs such as Ritalin can offer a window of opportunity to help kids realize, inside themselves, that they CAN focus better and be more productive. However, over time, drug benefits tend to fade and side effects tend to rise, so Lyon believes its best to look hard at the more holistic alternatives for a long-term solution. His book is chock-full of these. END

5.0 out of 5 stars A Must Read for Everyone Who Has an ADHD Child..., April 28, 2000
By
Kerrie Senyk (Calgary, Alberta) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Healing the Hyperactive Brain : Through the New Science of Functional Medicine (Paperback)
This is the best book I have ever read about the causes and non-drug treatment of ADHD in children and adults (and I have read many). This book cuts through the typical healthfood store nonsense and medical propaganda so commonly associated with this condition. This book is an inspiration for those who want to do everything they can before they turn to drugs.

I think this book is destined to become the "Bible" of natural methods to manage ADD and ADHD. Dr. Lyon is amazing in his ability to turn hard to understand scientific concepts into understandable and practical principles. This book has already become the most invaluable information resource that I possess on this topic!

4.0 out of 5 stars One of the better ADHD books, still some pseudo science, November 29, 2008
This review is from: Healing the Hyperactive Brain : Through the New Science of Functional Medicine (Paperback)
This is better than most books on ADHD (and I've read a large stack), but still includes some pseudo science mixed with knowns. And enough already on the advertisements for the rice protein drink for kids! For our child and family, this was a decent book on the medical side of the issue, and Howard Glasser's "Transforming the Difficult Child" was even more integral in helping our child by changing our parenting (and giving us a needed breather). Combining the information from both sources, we've made huge strides in a very short period of time to help our child without resorting to Ritalin, Adderall, Concerta, etc. Yeah!
