About the Author

PHIL RICH, EdD, MSW, is an experienced psychotherapist who has practiced for over twenty years. He has taught at the graduate and undergraduate levels and led professional workshops. He was born and raised in London, England, and now lives with his family in Amherst, Massachusetts. STUART A. COPANS, MD, is an associate professor of Clinical Psychiatry at Dartmouth Medical School and an attending physician at the Brattleboro Retreat. He is the author of books and book chapters on therapy. He and his wife have lived in Brattleboro, Vermont, for the past twenty-one years.

This is a comprehensive and well written book. I found it useful and interesting, and I think a book that can be of use to many who are either experiencing a problem with an addiction or want to learn more about addictions. It's also - and perhaps most important - a book intended to be used as a journal, so is also a very personal book that can help in many ways. Definitely recommended.

My son was not too happy to get this book, but I thought it was very helpful. If used properly, it really helps the addict take a look at themselves, without being preachy or difficult to use/understand. It uses repetition to force the reader to be truthful about their answers and the sections are short enough to not overwhelm. This book made my son take a long look at himself, his relationships with others and his impact on the world, now and in the future. Standing alone, it would not be enough to change and addicts behavior, but it is very good for teaching an addict to keep seeing themselves as part of a bigger picture.
