Most Helpful Customer Reviews

5 of 5 people found the following review helpful By Book Conspirator on June 27, 2013
Format: Paperback
This short, poignant, and very practical book explores with compassion and the wisdom of experience what actually happens to us when we suffer from heartache. If you are interested in the connection between emotional devastation and the physical organ of the heart, this board-certified pain doctor will help you understand the mind-body-spirit loop of pain and healing.

Very readable, with stories from Dr. Hind's personal life (he endured the catastrophic loss of his daughter) and the lives of his patients and friends. Includes an illuminating chapter on pets and why their deaths are so hard on the people who bond with them. Plenty of help for those struggling with chronic pain or long-term heartache in addition to those in acute stages.

Highly recommended for medical professionals as well, who will benefit from suggestions about diagnosing and treating heartache.

A great gift for someone you know who is grieving a loss.

Format: Paperback
Erv Hinds, MD, the author of Healing the Pain of Heartache: A Physician Explores Broken Heart Syndrome, has been practicing medicine for over 40 years. This book includes forthright and touching accounts of his professional and personal experiences. Hinds describes how his views of pain and healing have evolved over time to include both the science of physical risk factors to the heart and the mystery of how heartbreaking news can trigger acute and chronic health conditions.

Perhaps the most profound concept raised by Hinds is that by virtue of our humanity, all of us experience heartache. Our immediate reaction to heartbreaking news and/or suppressing heartache can result in physical ailments. No one is immune. Hinds asks the reader to consider: How will we acknowledge and heal from our own heartbreak? How can we be supportive of the healing process of those we love when their heart is broken?

Hinds offers practical advice that does not underestimate that the healing process is both arduous and rewarding. For example, Hinds reports, “The paradox of heartache is that it is likely to take from you the meaning you thought you needed and replace it with a meaning you could not have anticipated” (Hinds, 2010, p. 81).

This is an inspirational book and resource for people in the grip of heartache and for people who want to support friends, family members and clients whose hearts have been broken.
