Book Description

The Healing Power June 12, 1996
Aromatherapy—the use of fragrant essential oils to soothe, heal, and invigorate the mind and body—dates back as early as 4500 B.C. A mysterious blend of the ethereal and substantial, essential oils influence both our physical and spiritual well-being. The refreshing scent of eucalyptus clears the mind of tired thoughts. A compress of cypress, pine, or juniper eases the pain of arthritis. A rose oil massage dispels anxiety and restores a tranquil frame of mind. A drop of orange essence near our pillow sends us gently off to sleep.

This complete guide to the art of aromatherapy explains how essential oils work, and describes the many ways you can use them—from baths, massages, and room fragrances to poultices, gargles, and rubs. One index covers more than forty essential oils, their uses and healing properties. A second lists more than eighty common ailments and how to use essential oils to treat them. Here is all the information you need to practice natural, holistic aromatherapy at home.

3.0 out of 5 stars Great Overview, April 1, 2000
By A Customer
This review is from: The Healing Power of Aromatherapy: The Enlightened Person's Guide to the Physical, Emotional, and Spiritual Benefits of Essential Oils (Paperback)
I read the book The Healing Power of Aromatherapy by Hansnain Walji, Ph. D. This is the first book of its kind that I have read. It is a great overview book. It has a history of aromatherapy, when the use of aromatherapy was first recorded all the way up to current uses. The book gives you comparisons to or along with other types of therapy. The book povides a list of essential oils, what their key uses are, what family they belong to, a general description, a history and/or folk lore, where the oil is obtained, volatility, fragrance, principal constituents, contraindictions, general properties, and general uses. The book provides an overall mixing ratio. It does not provide specific recipes for a particular oil(s) and/or use(s), which I would like to see. Overall this book is a great overview and is excellent reading material for someone wanting broad information.

4.0 out of 5 stars An Introductory Book, June 18, 2002
This review is from: The Healing Power of Aromatherapy: The Enlightened Person's Guide to the Physical, Emotional, and Spiritual Benefits of Essential Oils (Paperback)
The ancient art of aromatherapy (dating back 6500 years) is thoroughly explored in this book, where the author looks at how essential oils affect our physical and mental well-being. The author does a good job of relating the history of aromatherapy too.

The book explains how the various essential oils work and how the average person can use them (baths, massages, skin care, and room fragrances). Walji also talks about various ailments/illnesses and the use of these oils for treating them naturally.

Aromatherapy is called an alternative therapy and uses natural plant scents to heal, relax, or energize the body. Oils are extracted from many parts of a plant: the leaves, flowers, roots, seeds, and from the rinds of fruit.

The author includes a complete appendix that explains which oils should be used for which condition, including depression, addiction, acne, athlete's foot, and warts.

This book is a good reference to use in addition to conventional health care. I am still not sure I am a believer but I do love my scented aromatherapy candles!
