Overstates the case for meditation,

This review is from: The Healing Power of Meditation: Your Prescription for Getting Well and Staying Well With Meditation (Paperback)
I have meditated for over 25 years and done graduate work in psychology.
This book will teach you a simple technique for relaxation not dissimilar to TM. IMO the book goes too far in ascribing benefits to meditation and Zen Buddhism that have not been proven. If you look at Page 198 of Margaret Caudill MD's Managing Pain Before It Manages You (which may help you if you have pain problems) you will see that in June, 2007, the Agency For Healthcare Research felt that no studies of acceptable quality supported the claims of meditation as treatment. So for relaxation, yes; for more, maybe but not proven.

A Compelling Case for the Healing Power of Meditation
Dr. Gabriel Weiss writes a compelling case for the healing power of meditation in a manner that is both specific and inclusive. He not only teaches us how to meditate but he also incorporates meditation into the comprehensive world-view. And he does this is a way that honors and respects our own philosophy of life. For example he affirms the Zen Buddhist mantra in the traditional "Om" form it with and integrating this into an "Ah-Om" mantra. He suggest that other mantras can be just as helpful and relates the story of a patient who discovers a new mantra during a visit to Israel that involves the Hebrew word ".Shalom." In doing so he respects and honors our own spirituality and world-view. In addition Dr Weiss includes art, music, literature and poetry as other vehicles for helping us to focus on the here and now and reap the benefits of the meditative process. The CD included with the book has several illustrations of these as well as teaching his basic meditation technique. I very much appreciate Dr. Weiss' whole person--body, mind and spirit--approach to health care as illustrated in this book and recommend it as a significant contribution to the integration of science and spirituality.

Meditation and well-being,
This review is from: The Healing Power of Meditation: Your Prescription for Getting Well and Staying Well With Meditation (Paperback)
Two factors without precedent in the western world that are contributing to increasing our knowledge about the intersection between medicine and meditation are: first the increasing scientific interest; secondly the sophisticated and increasingly sensitive technology that is available to study the mental processes. Dr. Gabriel Weiss' book summarizes scientific evidence in the field and also provides simple tools for those who want to benefit from meditation. In addition this book contains a remarkable gift, original illustrations by the Zen artist Rosemary KimBal, who with her dancing brush helps us to visually connect with the simplicity and beauty of meditation. Very helpful to the novice in meditation,

This review is from: The Healing Power of Meditation: Your Prescription for Getting Well and Staying Well With Meditation (Paperback)
I love this book! I have been trying to learn to use meditation techniques for many years and have always had trouble knowing how to read about it while simultaneously trying to practice it. The presence of the
CD with the author's soothing voice leading me through several types of meditation allows me to fully experience the process with my own personal guide! The written text is, by itself, user friendly and very interesting. Combine the text with the CD, and the novice in meditation has their own tutor for learning the process. I heartily recommend this book!

FANTASTIC BOOK!!!,

This review is from: The Healing Power of Meditation: Your Prescription for Getting Well and Staying Well With Meditation (Paperback)
I have been meditating for 35 years,I am NOT a psychologist.I am a retired engineering technician.
This is an outstanding book to learn how to begin meditation.I started with some of these techniques 35 years ago. They are tried and true methods. The references he lists are a treasure trove of information to go beyond the basics. The enclosed CD is FANTASTIC.He gives an example of how correctly to do a mantra. His lessons are also interactive,he waits for you to complete the exercise before going on.The song FANTASTY LAND gave me goosebumps and caused my heart and respiration rate to beat with the music. Dr. Weiss has been my primary care doctor for about 6 years.I am really exited about this book,I had no idea that he was so knowledgeable about meditation until this book. I already have purchased 6 books to give to my friends and plan to purchase more as time goes on |
