Editorial Reviews

From Publishers Weekly

In this well-paced book, Sachs celebrates the joys of sexuality, considering it a complex gift that requires a delicate balance of passion and judgment. Because sexuality is much more than two bodies, or even one, participating in a sexual act, she says it's important to explore all possible sexual dimensions. To that end, she includes sections on getting reacquainted with one's body, the importance of establishing a mind-body connection, achieving a healthy attitude toward sex, ways of adding vitality and spontaneity to sexual relationships, and why sex talk is important. She even makes suggestions on how parents can discuss sexual issues with their children. In light of these perilous times (read: HIV and other sexually transmitted diseases), information is supplied on how to have safer, smarter sex, and how to address these issues with a new partner. Although a reading list is provided, source notes would have been helpful, especially to substantiate some controversial statements-for example, that African American women are taught that it's wrong to touch themselves, or it's part of the Greek tradition for young men to select same-sex partners before they accept their traditional matrimonial obligations.

From Library Journal

In order to counter the often negative characterization of sex in contemporary society, sex therapist, educator, and consultant Sachs promotes healthy sexual behavior and intimacy as a way for people to experience a greater sense of wholeness and well-being. But this guidebook does not target the sexually dysfunctional. Instead, Sachs relies on research, case histories, and personal experiences to illustrate the "everydayness" of sexuality, emphasizing how sex takes place simultaneously on biological, psychological, emotional, and social planes. She provides a variety of tools for understanding and evaluating our sexual lives, including techniques, exercises, and advice for improving sexual experiences, open-minded discussions of sexual orientation and exploration, and a much-needed chapter on introducing children to a healthy sexual development. This book expands on Barbara Keeshing's Sexual Pleasure (Hunter House, 1993). A user-friendly addition to human development and sexuality collections; recommended for public libraries.

1.0 out of 5 stars Into Food Fantasies?, March 25, 1998
By A Customer
This review is from: The Healing Power of Sex (Hardcover)
If you're into food fantasies, than this is the book for you. Unfortunately, I don't know which turns me off more -- pouring food on my partner or cleaning up the mess it makes. Judith Sachs spends COUNTLESS pages on food and masturbation fantasies. Very few pages are spent on how sex actually heals. My recommendation? If you want to learn about the positive aspects of sexual healing, listen to Marvin Gaye or read Alex Comfort.
