It's about time someone made this subject simple!,
By A Customer
This review is from: The Healing Power of Vitamins, Minerals, and Herbs (Hardcover)
This wonderful reference book discusses all types of nutritional supplements, from vitamin pills to oils and teas. Two main sections let the reader look for either an Ailment (like allergies, overweight) or a Supplement (like acidophilus, garlic). Almost 100 ailments are covered, including chronic fatigue syndrome and fibromyalgia. The book describes symptoms and causes, suggests supplements and exact dosages, and offers many helpful tips, properly attributed either to folklore or science. For each supplement, two full pages explain what it is, what it does, available forms (liquid, tablet, cream etc.), possible side effects, and why people use it. There's also an entire section devoted to drug interactions. In my opinion, this book is truly courageous and refreshing. It tackles a touchy, complicated topic, yet it's easy to understand. It uses the latest scientific data, but it's simple enough for a 10 year old to use. Bravo!

It doesn't get any better than this!,
This review is from: The Healing Power of Vitamins, Minerals, and Herbs (Hardcover)
I'm an expert on nutritional supplements. I've read dozens of books on nutritional supplements, and this is my personal favorite. It covers all of the major supplements. And it gives precise instructions for using supplements to treat virtually every well-known health condition. There isn't anyone (including medical doctors) who would not benefit from reading this book. If you buy only one book on nutritional supplements - make this the one!

I am by no means an expert when it comes to vitamins, at least not until I got this book. It offers a great base knowledge of vitamins, minerals, herbs, and nutritional supplements, while explaining how to take them daily as well as using them to aid in treating common ailments. There are helpful sections that explain how suppliments can benefit you, how to buy suppliments, and how to use them safely and effectively. The chapters involving ailments give detailed information regarding symptoms, what causes the ailment, what supplements may help, and most importantly, when to call a doctor. While the book promotes the useage of supplements to aid in healing, it by no means discourages seeing a doctor. One thing I really liked about this book is that they give a listing of drug interactions. This is very crucial when you take supplements as you don't want them to counteract any prescription or over-the-counter drugs that you may be taking. Overall, this book is well written and easy for the novice to understand. It's a great starting point for all you beginners out there!

Enlightening and Informative,
This review is from: The Healing Power of Vitamins, Minerals, and Herbs (Hardcover)
"Today, conventional medicine has fewer quarrels with alternative medicine than in the past....This openness to exploring new methods of healing is especially relevant to what I see as the most significant trend in alternative medicine: the dramatic increase in the use of vitamins, minerals, herbs, and other nutritional supplements. For many people, these supplements have come to play an important role in medical self-care, either as preventative medicine or as therapy for a variety of ailments." -David Edelberg, M.D., the chief consultant for this book
"The Healing Power of Vitamins, Minerals, and Herbs" is an A-Z guide and so much more. This book will encourage a deeper understanding of how various supplements can enhance your health. These supplement may not always work miracles, but they do have proven benefits. A combination of supplements with a healthy diet and lifestyle changes (regular exercise, weight control, stress reduction) can help you avoid many trips to the doctor and help you avoid the "standard" medication or "prescription" refills we are all so used to. Contents: Comprehensive list of over 90 ailments discussed. The supplements and dosages to treat conditions is very helpful. This is the first section in the book and each ailment is given it's own two pages. It is easy to find your ailment in alphabetical order. For each ailment, you will find these items discussed: Symptoms When to Call a Doctor What it is What causes it How supplements can help Supplement Recommendations What else you can do Facts & Tips Latest Findings Did you Know Under Fatigue, you will not only find out that Hippocrates and Shakespeare wrote about it, but that there are many things you can do that do not include supplementation. Simple ideas like not skipping breakfast of avoiding caffeinated beverages. Could it be a vitamin B12 deficiency? Is it a result of stress? Too much exercise? The list goes on. Anyway, it is all very interesting to see the options. Ailments sections include: Acne, Aging, Alcoholism, Allergies, Alzheimer's disease, Anemia, Angina, Anxiety and Panic, Arrythmias, Arthritis, Asthma, Athlete's food, Back pain, Bad breath, Bronchitis, Burns, Cancer, Cancer Prevention, Canker sores, Carpal tunnel syndrome, Cataracts, Chronic fatigue syndrome, Chronic pain, Cold sores, Colds and flue, Congestive heart failure, Constipation, Cough, Cuts and Scrapes, Depression, Diabetes, Diarrhea, Diverticular disorders, Dizziness, Earache, Eczema, Endometriosis, Epilepsy, Eye infections, Fatigue, Fibrocystic breasts, Fibromyalgia, Flatulence, Gallstones, Gout, Gum disease, hair problems, Heart disease prevention, Heartburn, Hemorrhoids, Hepatitis, High blood pressure, High cholesterol, HIV/AIDS, Impotence, Infertility (male and female), Inflammatory bowel disease, Insect bites and stings, Insomnia, Irritable bowel syndrome, Lupus, Macular degeneration, Menopause, Menstral disorders, Migraine, Multiple sclerosis, Muscle aches and pains, Nail problems, Nausea and vomiting, Numbness and tingling, Osteoporosis, Overweight, Parkinson's disease, Premenstral syndrome, Prostate problems, Psoriasis, Raynaud's disease, Rheumatoid arthritis, Rosacea, Shingles, Sinusitis, Smoking, Sore throat, Sprains and strains, Stress, sunburn, Thyroid diseases, Tinnitus, Ulcers, Urinary tract infection, Varicose veins, Warts and Yeast Infections. ~The Rebecca Review

The Best Thus Far,
By Jen "jenrw74" (Pickerington, OH USA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: The Healing Power of Vitamins, Minerals, and Herbs (Hardcover)
This is the best book of it's kind I have ever seen. It is so to the point in it's descriptions of symptoms, treatments, and dosages for many common disorders and illnesses. It has an A-Z guide of disorders and an A-Z guide of all the vitamins, minerals, and herbs I have ever wanted to know about. The large, easy-to-read, colorful, glossy pages are great. Everything is easy to find. I own another book in this same category that has almost double the pages and it still does not come close to the information presented in this book. I recommend this book to any and everyone who is looking for the perfect book on natural healing.

My Uncle loaned me his copy of this book and I soon discovered that I had to have one of my own. Reader's Digest picked the best layout. There are about 38 pages to get you started on what and why vitamins and minerals are good for us. Then, 2 large sections that are remarkably helpful. The first, a list of ailments, symptoms and recommended supplements. The second section, a list of supplements and their properties. There is also a section I found most helpful on supplement interaction with other medications one may already be taking. This book is so very thorough. It has totally motivated me to go through with my new year's resolution of beginning a regime. As with anything new, the book always reminds us to check with a doctor before starting any supplements.

I have read other books on similar topics, but this book is exceptionally well written. Not only are the contents very eclectic but their organization is well planned too. I was quickly able to find and understand a lot of information. Everytime I have to look for some herb / mineral that I think is too obscure to be covered, this book surprises me. The side affects is also a very useful section and makes you very aware. I think this is a must have !!

THIS EASIEST-TO-USE REFERENCE IS ALSO AMONG THE BEST,

THE BEST OF THE BEST:
To put it simply, this is the ideal reference book for the application of vitamins, minerals, and herbs for medicinal purposes. It is the perfect complimentary companion to James Duke's "The Green Pharmacy Herbal Handbook". ORGANIZED TO BE USER FRIENDLY: After the introduction which goes through the user basics and preliminaries for the products to be discussed, the book is essentially divided into two main parts -- "AILMENTS" & "SUPPLEMENTS". The first section ["AILMENTS"] is alphabetically organized by ailment so that you can simply look up some malady like "Heartburn" and you'll find a two-page section organized like this: "What It Is", "What Causes It", "How Supplements Can Help" + "Symptoms", "When To Call A Doctor", "Supplement Recommendations" and "What Else You Can Do". Each ailment's section ends with inserts titled "Facts & Tips" and "The Latest Findings". This is repeated for 90 ailments in precisely the same format, making it very easy retrieve information when you need it -- fast. The second section ["SUPPLEMENTS"] is alphabetically organized by supplement with each supplement color coded in the table of contents to distinguish between vitamins, minerals, and herbs. Pick a supplement, say "Garlic", and you'll find its entry in the contents and in section two highlighted with green to indicate that it is an herb. Again, there is convention to the listing, it is 2 pages per supplement and is organized like this: "What It Is", "What It Does" ["PREVENTION" & "ADDITIONAL BENEFITS"], plus "Common Uses", "Forms", "Caution!", "How To Take It" ["DOSAGE" & "GUIDELINES FOR USE"], & "Possible Side Effects". Border inserts at the end of each supplement's section include "Shopping Hints" and "The Latest Findings". Appendices at the end of the book include "Other Supplements", "Glossary" and "Drug Interactions", all of which relate directly to the supplements and ailments that are specifically discussed in the book in at least one of the two main sections. For instance, if a supplement is listed under "Supplement Recommendations" for an ailment in Section 1 and it is not also cross-referenced under "Supplements" in section 2, it will always be included in the "Other Supplements" appendix before the glossary. For example, Bromelain is mentioned several times for ailments, but is not included under supplements with its own heading, so there is an "Other Supplements" listing for it. OVERALL: This book is seamlessly-organized and smartly-illustrated making it ideal both as a good read and as a first-aid guide to using supplements prudently. When my 16-year-old daughter asked for a book about supplements this is what I gave her. She still has not returned it. From what I have read here, I am not the only one waiting for this book to return.
