Book Description

Ign Green S. October 1, 2000
Vinegar has been used since ancient times as a zesty seasoning and a healthy tonic to relieve fatigue, help digestion and aid in weight loss. Today, vinegar is being rediscovered for its potential to help prevent and treat a wide range of conditions. In "The Healing Powers of Vinegar", health journalist Cal Orey tells the remarkable story of vinegar, a time-honored folk remedy and modern health wonder. Written in a lively and easy-to-read style, this book traces the origins of vinegar lore to ancient Greece and Egypt, and then follows its history to the present day. Quoting from leading alternative health practitioners as well as medical researchers, Orey describes the latest research about vinegar's cutting-edge nutrients, including:
-- A new class of antioxidants found in red wine vinegar and apple cider vinegar that slows down blood clotting and inhibits cancer-forming carcinogens
-- A powerful class of nutrients found in red wine vinegar that helps fight allergies and viruses as well as reduce cholesterol levels
-- Amino acids -- for memory loss and anti-aging
-- Enzymes -- for digestive disorders and poor metabolism
-- Minerals -- to prevent bone diseases such as osteoporosis, prevent strokes, treat anemia and fatigue, as well as lower high blood pressure and high cholesterol
-- Ingredients that suppress appetite and aid weight loss

Includes true stories of vinegar's curative powers, household uses, and beauty preparations and over 100 recipes that team up vinegar with other nutritious foods for a healthier, longer life.

From the Inside Flap

The Apple and the Grape Yield Two Powerful Vinegars

Apple cider vinegar has been touted by vinegar gurus as one of nature's most healthful foods, especially if made from fresh, organically grown apples, then allowed to age. And now, red wine vinegar, the ignored condiment, may be its new sidekick, thanks to the grape known as "the vine healer."

People from all walks of life--as well as some vinegar pioneers and contemporary medical experts--believe apple-rich cider vinegar aids digestion, helps maintain weight, and keeps blood pressure down. Apple cider vinegar is also known to relieve congestion and maintain healthy skin.

And now, New Age doctors claim red grapes yield another amazing vinegar. Red wine vinegar, claim medical experts, contain healtful nutrients that are part of the "neutraceutical revolution," too. While it's apples that make apple cider vinegar what it is, it is the grape that may be core of red wine vinegar's nutrients.

In this book, I will show you how using both vinegars can be one of the best things you do for yourself--and your health. But note, many people will not want to reap the benefits of vinegar by drinking the healthy brew solo. While vinegar is great for salad, it also is a great seasoning for many foods. Vinegar has a vast number of uses in cooking, and I've included more than 100 recipes to help heal your body, mind, and spirit.

But first, let's go way back into the past. Take a close-up look at why and how vinegar is one of the world's first--and most prized--natural medicines.

5.0 out of 5 stars BABY BOOMER RESCUED, January 13, 2007
As a member of the aging baby boomer generation I've had to become much more health conscience. I ran across a few articles talking about the benefits of apple cider vinegar and decided to investigate it further. There are a number of books on the subject. Most were written as a cure all and lacked vital pieces of the puzzle. I wanted a book that took an in depth look at how I could treat the residual effects of eating processed foods for years - foods filled with processed sugar, high carbohydrate, and high fat, etc. I found this wonderful book that contains a full spectrum of information I found extremely timely and useful. I started drinking apple cider vinegar on a daily basis - the pounds and inches are melting away. I'm hooked! Moreover, I started to incorporate more of the Mediterranean foods -- fruits and veggies -- into my diet along with healthy smoothies in the morning and nutritious sandwiches at night with a splash of olive oil to keep heart-healthy. I highly recommend this book to people who want to improve their health and overall physical appearance.

5.0 out of 5 stars The Healing Powers of Vinegar, March 7, 2007
I just got this book and it's great. I had a horrible headache when it arrived, tried the apple cider vinegar remedy and started getting immediate relief. It is full of information about the different types of vinegar and how they can help you. The range goes from home cures, household, and tips for pets and kids. The back of the book is full of really good recipes. This is not a skimpy book and it's very easy to read. I highly recommend this book!

I was surprised that red wine vinegar has some of the same heart-healthy benefits of red wine. This is of special interest since I don't drink alcoholic drinks. I really like the natural health remedies that were in the book since I believe in natural cures. Great book and and a joy to read.
