A little about me, I have been trying to lose a substantial amount of weight for over a year and a half now. Through exercise I was able to lose 15 pounds and go down a pants size, but I want to lose well over 50. One thing I had difficulty overcoming was my eating habits. This book gave me insight about weight loss and eating I never thought possible, and best of all, it was very simple.

I bought the book when it barely came out, being a huge Hawkins reader, (I have read all of his books and plan on attending a lecture in the future) and once again he taught me something new that I never realized before. I actually read the weight loss chapter first before any of the other ones, and it has helped me TREMENDOUSLY!! After doing the weight loss technique, which only took about roughly an hour and a half of work, I've lost an ADDITIONAL 20 pounds and have gone down another pants size! (And I'm still losing weight) The weight loss technique literally got rid of any addiction I had to food. But to be honest, there was a downside, I did feel slightly depressed afterward since I no longer had food as a way to "feel good".

But after that I've gotten to love food more than before! Best of all, I can do it without overeating. Now I eat way less and don't feel controlled by hunger. And this is just the chapter on weight loss! The rest of the book is just as insightful and powerful as his weight loss chapter, particularly his chapter on sexuality, which is almost poetic. He discusses all the illnesses he personally had to overcome, and through simple changes in his belief systems ("We are subject to what we hold in mind"), how he came to heal them.

Many readers of Hawkins may not know that on his publisher's website there is a series of DVDs for sale called the "Archival Office Visit Series," in which the doctor is dressed in a different crisp suit and bow tie for each talk looking and sounding like a dry academic while sitting behind his office desk or standing in front of a chalk board with the Map of Consciousness neatly drawn there. These DVD's date from material filmed in the late 1980's. "Healing and Recovery" is almost a word-by-word transcription of that series. The Office Visit Series, despite being of terrible technical quality, is the best in content that Hawkins offers in DVD or CD format. In fact, I have been disappointed in most every DVD or CD of Hawkins I have purchased because I compare it to this excellent early work of his. Naturally I am glad to have the "Archives" in printed form. My only criticism is that after more than 20 years after first presenting this material to the public, why doesn't Hawkins have any more insights to add?

The material is of a completely practical nature and can be put into practice immediately in one's life:

Ch.1 A Map of Consciousness
Ch 2 Assisting Healing
Ch 3 Stress
Ch 4 Health
Ch 5 Spiritual First Aid
Ch 6 Sexuality
Ch 7 The Aging Process
Ch 8 Handling Major Crises
Ch 9 Worry, Fear and Anxiety
Ch 10 Pain and Suffering
Ch 11 Losing Weight
Ch 12 Depression
Ch 13 Alcoholism
Ch 14 Cancer
Ch 15 Death and Dying

I'm so happy to have found this book! The message here is : "We are subject to what we hold in mind". I'd heard the saying "Mind over Matter" many times but had never fully grasped the gravity of its meaning until reading this book. I'd always supposed that it meant that you could "will" something away. Very happy to discover that willfulness "don't work" (I'd been breaking my back for years trying!!) and all you need is the willingness to surrender to something as it is. Very different to passivity!
Practical and straight-forward - Thank you Dr. David Hawkins.

The simplicity of the required actions that one can take to heal oneself is amazing. i have tried some of Dr Hawkins suggestions and have found them to be beneficial. Dr Hawkins refers to the Map of consciousness in each chapter which assists the reader to understand the practical application of the Map in their every day life. There are many references to other supporting information.

The book is easy to read and I suggest that people keep sticky tags handy so they can mark information that is relevant.

The book reminds us of our inherent innocence and how our beliefs are the cause of our experiences & .suggests techniques on how to transcend them.

Very enjoyable & inspiring read.

Lots of good info. He reiterates the power of belief/mind so much that it altered my beliefs for the better.
After reading the chapter on weight loss, I set a goal to lose 10 pounds in 7 days.
I lost 14 pounds in 7 days and I have kept it off.
239 to 225.
He also stresses how much unconcious guilt most people have and how it causes so many of the illnesses that we have. I highly recommend this book for ANY body. I did buy it mainly for the Alcoholism section.
He mostly just touts AA. But in spite of not getting all I may have hoped for on alcoholism specifically it is well worth reading.
