We are a society that is accustomed to eating whatever we want whenever we want it. But for centuries cultures throughout the world have known that eating and living in harmony with the seasons can have a huge impact on health. In
Healing Secrets of the Seasons: Recipes and Remedies that Soothe, De-stress, and Energize Throughout the Year, culinary and health expert and coauthor of
Healing Foods Judith Benn Hurley takes this ancient seasonal wisdom and tells readers how to apply it to their daily lives.
The book is divided into four chapters, one for each season. Each chapter includes beneficial activities, herbal remedies, and healing practices to promote seasonal well-being. Plus, Hurley details the best foods for winter, spring, summer, and fall. Quick cooking tips and seasonal menu suggestions are included along with more than 250 easy and delicious vegetarian recipes. Additional chapters reveal the best ways to stay healthy during the transitions between seasons, a time when the body is particularly vulnerable to disease. Healing Secrets of the Seasons will give your taste buds and psyche a new perspective on the seasons and will help you stay balanced and healthy all year long. --Ellen Albertson
From Library Journal
Hurley (Savoring the Day, LJ 12/15/96) intersperses gems of wisdom on healing with recipes for each season of the year. Many of the recipes, though not all, are suitable for vegetarians. She includes folk wisdom as well as standard modern nutrition information. "Gateways" lead the reader through the transitions between seasons when we're most vulnerable to illness. Each seasonal section is organized into beverages and foods (e.g., "carrots, the stomach settler," with carrot recipes following). Each recipe includes an addendum noting what to do "if the weather is dry" or "if the weather is wet." This is a novelty book, not for everyone. It is recommended where there is demand for Hurley's other books.?Loraine F. Sweetland, Information Problem Solvers, Crossville, TN
