Book Description

0966982207 978-0966982206 November 30, 1998 First Edition
In Healing the Shadow, Santa Fe shaman, Ross Bishop, offers a unique perspective on self-healing and therapy. Ten years in the making and based on twenty years of healing experience, Shadow provides readers with the tools and resources to manifest positive change in their lives.
The forces in the shadow (see author comments) are explainable, understandable and can be dealt with. For 40,00 years shaman have been teaching people about the forces of the shadow and how to deal with them. Healing The Shadow renders those ancient concepts into a form that can both be understood and used in the modern Western world. Healing The Shadow explains why life is the way it is and provides meaningful help in managing it. That's a bold promise, but read the book. It delivers.
Shadow explains the origins of our stifled passion and how the fear created by the shadow affects everything we do. In addition to explaining these limiting forces, the book offers practices to help each individual move through their self-limiting beliefs and fears. Most notable of these is a presentation, for the first time in print, of the ancient shamanic practice of "soul retrieval" adapted to fit the needs of modern society.
Healing The Shadow is a transforming and life enhancing book. It is one of the best guides to understanding and transforming life you will ever read. Once you understand what has been really going on you will be in a vastly better position to make the changes you desire. Healing The Shadow brings answers at a time when we desperately need new insights and new understandings. Ross's book, created over years of shamanic healing practice, brings the tools and understanding that will allow the repressed and hidden inner you to emerge into the sunlight feeling safe, confident and aware.

From the Publisher

SHAMANISM People are curious about Shamanism. Although the term is becoming more widely used, there is not a lot of understanding about what it is. Shamanism is not a cultural phenomenon. It reaches beyond acculturation into the core of the individual and works there, regardless of a person's background, training or beliefs. That is why it has been successfully practiced for so many years in vastly different cultures spread all over the planet. People in the West are hungry to bring peace into their lives and the universal appeal of shamanism is beginning to provide a way.
First, shaman are many things, but most of what they do is to show people how to heal. The shadow is the domain where the shaman does his work because that is where the physical, emotional and psychic difficulties people experience originate. For example, the Western view is that we become ill through a failure of the body. The shaman recognizes illness as a warning, and a serious one, that a person has not been paying attention to the disharmonies in his or her life. For a shaman, it is God's way of asking people to pay more attention to something they have been reluctant to look at.
In the West, what we know as music originated as the shaman's song. What we know as dance and art all began with shamanic healing rituals. Medicine, religion and the arts all evolved directly from shamanic practice. Although they have become secularized, the universal appeal of the arts is in the "magic" of these practices to heal. All of these forms have a common root in the sacred healing arts of the shaman. Shaman did not create politics, lawyers, the military and bankers (these were the domain of the tribal chief).

5.0 out of 5 stars An excellent cataylst to the work of serious soul growth., February 20, 1999
This review is from: Healing The Shadow (Paperback)
Calling upon a wide range of sources within the perrenial wisdom tradition, and a personal journey of great depth, Ross Bishop invites us to meet face to face with the inner demons that block our path. While most books of this genre offer quick and deceptively easy pathways into the light, Bishop courageously asks the much harder question of how to deal with darkness - what to do with our internal resistance, the self-sabotaging mechanisms that derail us, and the wounded inner child, frozen by fear, that keeps us from moving forward despite our best intentions. The book is filled with insight, as well as practical suggestions tested in over 20 years of work with private clientele. But it is not for those simply looking for a comfortable new age read, for it ultimately demands putting the book down and actually doing the work. If you are serious about moving forward with your life, however, this book will become a treasured dog-eared ally.

5.0 out of 5 stars Shamanism meets psychology, February 12, 2004

This review is from: Healing The Shadow (Paperback)
Ross Bishop melds shamanic practice with deep psychological insight in this book, more successfully than others I've read. Interestingly I'd just finished Firestone's The Fantasy Bond, which is psych theory, and Bishop was saying much the same things, and better (for laymen). The journey excercises are well described and they do work! While much shamanic work involves dealing with our issues purely symbolically - or in detail via recapping or such - Ross' method merges the symbolic with memory recapping, something I've found effective. A great bonus is the list of books he likes, like an expanded Amazon listmania list!

5.0 out of 5 stars Facing the "Beast", September 16, 2002
This review is from: Healing The Shadow (Paperback)
Bishop's book is a very valuable and inspirational book for any one wishing to heal their innerchild. Bishop is an experienced shaman who writes from his own experiences as well as other case studies. The reading material is easy to follow as well as pleasant to read. Bishop leads the reader into learning how to recognize and even accept the "Beast" within. He explains how the "Beast" is manifested by the innerchild and gives easy to follow steps on how to communicate with the "Beast". He explains that once the "Beast" is heard, blockages can be removed and healing can occur.

This book is both enlightening and healing. Without a doubt, it deserves 5 stars!
