Editorial Reviews

Review

"I would recommend that you quickly skim the book overall, to get a general feeling for it, and then concentrate on the organ system/s you feel a need to work with. Do not attempt to overdo it. Take your time and the benefits will become apparent." (Michael Gleason, Witchgrove.com, June 2009)

". . . a healing guide recommended for any new age library." (California Bookwatch, The Midwest Book Review, Sept 2009)

HEALTH / BODYWORK

One of the chief tools in the traditional Chinese doctor’s toolbox is an understanding of the circadian rhythms that govern all the organ systems of the body. In addition to facilitating early and accurate diagnosis, this “organ clock” lets the practitioner apply therapies to the organ’s meridians when they are at their peak functioning point, thereby eliciting the greatest benefit.

In this book authors Michael Gienger and Wolfgang Maier have created a simple, yet highly effective self-care treatment system for addressing common health ailments using gemstones and the organ clock. They detail the healing benefits of 83 crystals, indicating the physical as well as emotional, psychic, and spiritual aspects they support in each of 12 major organ systems. For example, the stomach not only receives nourishment for the body but also fosters the ability to engage in new things in life. Agate and calcite assist this function by giving confidence for new experiences, while aiding in digestion (and processing hard to digest thoughts). Treatments for the stomach should be done between 7:00 and 9:00 a.m., the time we typically take in new nourishment after a night of sleep, to receive maximum results. With each body system in turn, the authors explain how to select the stones best suited to address your current health concerns, the times of day they should be used, and how long treatment should last in order to restore optimum health and prevent the onset of future illness.

MICHAEL GIENGER is one of Europe’s most respected experts on crystals and their uses, a field in which he has been active since 1978. He is the author, in German, of an authoritative dictionary on this subject. WOLFGANG MAIER began his training in traditional Chinese medicine in 1989 and in 1999 began collaborating with Gienger to establish the first combination of TCM and stone healing. Both authors live in Germany.

Typical of Gienger's works so far, this book is beautifully though simply illustrated, and it is appreciably user-friendly. the preliminary chapters focus on the meridian system of Traditional Chinese Medicine, the application of the organ clock, methods of treatment, and related topics. As the first of its kind, this book presents a lot of unique information, although each chapter seems overly simplified.

The chapters dedicated to the crystals themselves are divided to one chapter per organ/section of the clock, and they include heart, small intestine, bladder, kidneys, etc. The associated meridians are stimulated and regulated by various gemstones as proscribed in any chapter. Each organ/meridian relates not only to physiological correspondences, but also to emotional, psychological, and spiritual ones. Seeing as every meridian has its strong points and weaknesses, the chapters address one list of stone each, but it is done several times. Every repetition relates to a different theme embodied by that meridian.

I was a little disappointed to find that many of these sections are based on colour associations, rather than evidence of use in Traditional Chinese Medicine or, conversely, according to their composition and structure. Still, I find this to be a very good book geared towards the therapeutic aspects of understanding how to work with gemstones for healing.

One of the main tools in the traditional Chinese doctor's toolbox is an understanding of circadian rhythms governing the body's organs, and this book builds upon that understanding, offering a self-care treatment system using gemstones paired with an understanding of these rhythms. Time frames pair with body organ purposes physical and psychic in a healing guide recommended for any new age library.

This book suggests 83 different crystals to use on the Chinese meridians for health and healing. It's interesting, but is it science? I had to go to outside sources to find the answer to that question, most notably Light: Medicine of the Future, by Jacob Liberman. Healing Stones for the Vital Organs does not cover - indeed, barely even mentions - how and why crystal healing works: it has to do with the crystal's molecular structure and radiation frequency on the color spectrum of visible light. I don't like authors (or doctors, for that matter) telling me to do something for my health without telling me how it works. I'm giving Healing Stones for the Vital Organs 4 stars because it provided good information on WHAT stones to use for what ailments, WHERE to place the stones on the body, and WHEN (at what time of the day). It would be nice if a future edition of this book were to include some scientific research to back up the author's claims.
