5.0 out of 5 stars I BROKE MY REWIND BUTTON!THANK U "S.F.P."
Ya'know,I really feel good when I buy albums like this.No word of mouth( no pun attended),no posters on lamppost to remind of the release date or any other advertisement for that matter.Just good ol' fashioned searching around for the right material. So I guess you can say I've found my needle in the haystack. The sticker on cover didn't lie when it said "One of the best...

3.0 out of 5 stars Little Brother's little brothers
Without Little Brother, you probably never hear Strange Fruit Project. That's not to say the new bites the old, but the Carolina crew did pave the way for the sound that dominates The Healing. Both groups blur the line between rap and soul and sound like they love every second of it.

Strange Fruit Project's sound revolves around a feel that all the best...

5.0 out of 5 stars THANK GOD THERE IS STILL GOOD MUSIC, July 28, 2006

I don't need to say many things about this album. My anticipation is finaly over, and i'm just glad that there are still people out there who are concerned about this genre of music.
When i was little bit younger i was all into boom bap rap, looking for Wu-tang and Onyx stuff. But as the time pass (maybe my taste matured),and looking whats happening with those groups i'm diggin the chill-soulfull hip hop. I have to mention ,that i was in Taipei before 2 and half weeks to see Onyx live. But as i expected: Only Freddro Starr showed up and there, acting 40 minutes only.No need to say anything, just go look for this kind of rap/soul maybe you'll change your aspects and you'll apreciate the hip hop as its in this form.
HIGHLY RECCOMENDED.

4.0 out of 5 stars Dirty South? {4 Stars}, March 13, 2007
This review is from: Healing (Audio CD)
If Little Brother were still interesting, not full of themselves, or taking themselves so seriously, they'd sound like Strange Fruit Project. I know I'll get a lot of unhelpfuls for that statement, but I think S1, Myth, and Myone have similar rhyme styles to LB, but with more speed and fluidity and less dependence on metaphors and similies. You can witness the similarities and the differences on "Rise" which features Little Brother. Not only do they spit like no other rapper I've ever heard out of Texas, but the production is on point as well. S1 raps, but he also (excellently) produces 5 of the 14 tracks with 9th Wonder (1), the underrated Illmind (3), Nicolay (1), M-Phazes (1), the constantly overlooked Jake One (1), The Foundation, and Vitamin D holding down the rest of the production. I have to say that the beats are definitely what you'd expect from that lineup.

As far as flaws go, there really aren't many. Maybe one or two tracks are what I would label as skip material (Liberation & Pinball). They just didn't grab the ears of this particular listener, but if you dig that smooth stuff, then you should be able to play this one from start to finish.

The Healing is easily one of the top 15 hip hop releases of 2006. S1, Myth, and Myone are some of the dopest rappers I've ever heard to come out of the lone star state. To be honest, I never knew Texas had it in 'em. I recommend adding this one to your library.

Standout Tracks: The Plague, Soul Clap, You (The Only Ones) (My Favorite), A Change feat. The Procussins [Bonus Track], Get Live feat. Erykah Badu, Under Pressure, Makin' My Way, and Special feat. Thesis

I have only known about strange fruit for a short time, but I have come to realize that they are one of the elite rap groups out there. I see a lot of similarities with SFP and Little Brother. Keep on doing it!

3.0 out of 5 stars Little Brother's little brothers, January 25, 2008
This review is from: Healing (Audio CD)
Without Little Brother, you probably never hear Strange Fruit Project. That's not to say the new bites the old, but the Carolina crew did pave the way for the sound that dominates The Healing. Both groups blur the line between rap and soul and sound like they love every second of it.

Strange Fruit Project's sound revolves around a feel that all the best southern music contains. It combines soulful originality with a remarkably carefree attitude. Hip-hop is one of the easiest genres to pick out this southern ethos. No matter what the artist is talking about, you know they're having fun. From commercial to underground, old to new, the rappers down south are enjoying themselves a little more than everyone else.

Take "Good Times" for example. Everywhere else, the rapper with the so-so at best singing voice would take the hook off and a singer would handle that. But here, Myone, Myth, and S1 handle it themselves... and it comes off great. Not to mention that one of them puts on a ridiculous voice at the end to sing-joke their way out of the song. That only happens down south.

And how often does a group have three MCs in it without at least one being an obvious weak link? SFP is a true collaboration of equals. These guys are all really nice with the mic. Any doubts, check out what they do with the Jake One production on "Soul Clap." The track is an MC's dream with plenty of space between the boom-bap for the vocals to shine. It's a place where if the rapper holds up his end, the song will soar. And it does here.

9th Wonder delivers a brilliant production effort on "Special." As with so much of 9th's work, the song revolves around a moving vocal sample. Setting the mood further, the verses move between the beautiful singing of Thesis and the SFP guys' lyrics. A perfect illustration of the dynamic that permeates the entire album. Not to mention, enough to make you wonder when Thesis will drop an album of her own.

The only slow point of the album is "Pinball." Not because the song is bad, but because it breaks the mood of the larger work. Where everything else is about soul music, Vitamin D produces a track that is gimmicky. On its own or on a different project, the song would be fine, but here it feels out-of-place.

SFP has been bubbling on the underground level for a good little while now. If you've heard them before, The Healing is another piece of their discography that you'll need to pick up. If this is the first you're reading about them, then this album is a perfect introduction to a group that could quickly become one of your favorites.

5.0 out of 5 stars This cd blew me away, November 16, 2006

I am old school hip hop at 45, but I really dig it when true skillz and flava bang from underground to my disc player. My hobby is finding good underground hip hop, jazz, house, lounge and this is one of my tops for the year. Being from Atlanta, I am glad to see some intelligent rhyme talent represent Dixie, rather than the shouting and chanting that has come to define Southern Rap. It would be nice if more young brothers and sisters could try and take it back to the roots of hip hop. This music is along the lines of Swamburger, People Under the Stairs, Jurrassic 5, Colossus, etc. Nice hooks, slamming beats intelligent and articulate.

4.0 out of 5 stars Good album!, August 7, 2007
This review is from: Healing (Audio CD)
This is a great album for the soulful hiphop fans. Every track is consistent in sound with the next. The content is positive, which is a breath of fresh air based on all the negative stuff in hiphop we hear these days. The only thing i can nit pick is that some of the songs start to sound the same and the beats get a lil repetetive. however, thats only if you listen to the album over and over again (which i have). bottom line, this album gets play in my player for sure. get yours
