3.0 out of 5 stars Good overview
Well written explanation of benefits of sunlight - as opposed to the ridiculous paranoia emanating from the "slip, slop, slap" brigade. My only reservation was that there wasn't enough discussion on the "practicalities" - eg. how long? at what time of day? etc

This review is from: The Healing Sun: Sunlight and Health in the 21st Century (Paperback)
In The Healing Sun: Sunlight And Health In The 21st Century, Richard Hobday shows how the sun is central to human health and well-being. He explains that sunlit houses can help prevent disease, make us feel happier, and save energy; that sunlight can help prevent and heal many common (and often fatal) disease like breast cancer, heart disease, multiple sclerosis and osteoporosis; that sunlight was used successfully to speed up the healing of wounds before the invention of antibiotics; tanning moderately throughout the year is better than avoiding the sun altogether; sudden bursts of strong solar radiation are unnatural and dangerous, protection needs to be built up slowly, early morning sunlight in cool temperatures is particular beneficial to the body; sunlight hospital rooms provide a better environment for the treatment of clinically depressed people; prolonged exposure to artificial light puts the body under great stress; and much, much more. The Healing Sun is a unique and invaluable contribution to personal and professional alternative health and medical reference collections.

5.0 out of 5 stars The Truth About Sunlight, November 13, 2006

This review is from: The Healing Sun: Sunlight and Health in the 21st Century (Paperback)
Many ancient cultures worshipped the sun, which is understandable given the healing power it contains. While I don't worship the sun, but rather it's Creator, I am truly grateful for the healing power it contains. For years sunlight has been put down as unhealthy by the mainline medical establishment. In his well researched, most imterestingly written book, "The Healing Sun," Richard Hobday not only gives you the history of sunlight theraphy, but also the facts concerning the health benfefits of sunlight.

Did you know that:
-Sunlight can prevent and heal many common and often fatal diseases like breast cancer, heart disease, multiple sclerosis, and osteoporosis?
-Before antibiotics, sunlight was used successfully to spped up helaing of wounds?
-Prolonged exposure to artifical light puts the body under great stress?
-Early morning sunlight in cool temperatures is especially benificial to the body?
Read this well written, informative book for the details concerning all these facts and much more.

I have always known the sun was my friend. I never cowered to the medical fanatics who warn against allowing sunshine to touch my skin. Now I finally found a book that reveals the studies to prove that not only is the sun NOT the evil monster in the sky, but indeed it's warming rays are extremely important to the health and well-being of humans on earth. Read how it appears that sunshine can convert a substance called squalene (which would otherwise turn to cholesterol) to much needed vitamin D when skin is exposed to sunlight and thus lower blood pressure, lower cholesterol, strengthen bones and even help in lowering incidents of various diseases (cancer, heart disease and more). This book also tells us why we should be very skeptical of sunscreens. This little book is packed with critical information and the studies to back it up. I even bought a second book to give to my parents who live in Florida but never allow the sunlight to touch their bodies. Both of them suffer from high blood pressure and too much cholesterol, and mom has already broken a hip.

Vitamin D is the hottest vitamin at the moment and the best way to get it is naturally under our infamous sun. The author very credibly explains away the media demonization of solar radiation and makes one feel secure in getting out in the sun again.

I enjoyed reading Dr Hobday's book on how important the sun is to our health; and that everyone telling us to stay out of the sun and slather on sunscreen, use UV protected lenses is hazardous to our health. What I liked best were the guidelines of exposure based on latitude. I would recommend this book to anyone looking for a safe way to get vit D without having to take loads of supplements.

5.0 out of 5 stars Fascinating!, March 20, 2009

This is a fascinating read. Richard Hobday takes you through the history of "heliotherapy" (sun therapy) and how it was ousted with the discovery of antibiotics, then makes the connection that we, as we live in our sheltered environments in artificial light have disconnected from the natural world and are deprived not only of Vitamin D, "the sunshine Vitamin," but of other not yet understood ways sunlight works on our human system.

When doctors used to send tuberculosis patients "out west" where the sun shone clearly and strongly, they knew something that's been overlooked by much of modern medicine.,

If you've ever suffered from an infectious disease, diabetes, cancer or any of a number of modern diseases, this little book is worth your consideration.

2400IU of D3 per day might create hypercalcemia????????????????
The author really needs to look at the real study and not the one fudged by the FDA.
Want to learn the real deal about Vitamin D Check out:
1-Dr. John Cannell on vitamin D
2-Robert P. Heaney MD (Creighton University Professor)
3-The vitamin D council
4-Cedric Garland, Dr. P.H.D
and I pass
In a new study, researchers at the UCSD School of Medicine and Moores Cancer Center used a complex computer prediction model to determine that intake of vitamin D3 and magnesium would prevent 58,000 new cases of breast cancer and 49,000 new cases of colorectal cancer annually in the US and Canada. The researchers model also predicted that 75% of deaths from these cancers could be prevented with adequate intake of vitamin D3

To top is all off sunblocks are the one responsible for the increase of the incidence of skin cancer
cooking carcinogens on your skin is definitely not a good idea.
Recurrence of breast cancer for women taking 5000IU of Vitamin D3 and magnesium is laughable compare to
groups not taking vitamin D. the American Cancer Society forgot to tell you that one as they need your money
and give you pink ribbon. Do not take my word for it do you research.

--------------------------
One thing that I agree with is that the benefits of the sun far outweigh the whole media created hysteria about UVA's and UVB's.

Let me quote some article from the vitamin D council:
In 1999, Vieth indirectly asked the medical community to produce any evidence 10,000 units of vitamin D a day was toxic, saying "Throughout my preparation of this review, I was amazed at the lack of evidence supporting statements about the toxicity of moderate doses of vitamin D." He added: "If there is published evidence of toxicity in adults from an intake of 250 ug (10,000 IU) per day, and that is verified by the 25(OH)D concentration, I have yet to find it."

Like most medication, cholecalciferol is certainly toxic in excess, and, like Coumadin, is used as a rodent poison for this purpose. Animal data indicates signs of toxicity can occur with ingestion of 0.5 mg/kg (20,000 IU/kg ), while the oral LD50 (the dose it takes to kill half the animals) for cholecalciferol in dogs is about 88 mg/kg, or 3,520,000 IU/kg. This would be equivalent to a 110-pound adult taking 176,000,000 IU or 440,000 of the 400 unit cholecalciferol capsules.

Vieth reports human toxicity probably begins to occur after chronic daily consumption of approximately 40,000 IU/day (100 of the 400 IU capsules). Heavy sun exposure when combined with excessive supplement use is a theoretical risk for vitamin D toxicity, but if such a case has been reported, I am not aware of it.

Physician ignorance about vitamin D toxicity is widespread. A case report of four patients appeared in the 1997 Annals of Internal Medicine, accompanied by an editorial warning about vitamin D toxicity. However, careful examination of the patients reveals that both papers are a testimony to the fact that incompetence about vitamin D toxicity can reach the highest levels of academia.

Please do some serious research before taking what you read for granted and as proven science.

Peace, great health and long life to you all

5.0 out of 5 stars You NEED to read this book!!, December 5, 2008

This review is from: The Healing Sun: Sunlight and Health in the 21st Century (Paperback)
This book is a MAJOR eye opener. After all of the "doctor's orders" over the past decade to stay out of the sun because of skin cancer, this book gives you a 180 degree different perspective and led me on a quest to learn more about the benefits of Vitamin D -and the lack of it- on our health.

If you are struggling with ANY form of chronic health problems, you may just be surprised that following the guidelines in this book just may seriously improve your health!!

Having been a Registered Nurse for over 14 years, a lot of the information in this book goes against EVERYTHING that I had been taught. But in a nation of increasing antibiotic resistant infections, we just may be forced to return to whatever works for good health- and it's contained in this book.

Learn these principles now and when antibiotics are useless, you'll have free medicine in your toolkit that you can use anytime.
