Editorial Reviews

From the Inside Flap

Annette Langer's trials and tribulations will bring a tear to your eye as her ever-present positive outlook will bring a smile to your face.

Allen Klein, Author and President of the Association for Applied and Therapeutic Humor
---
Her joy, grace and zest for living despite her own challenges shine through on every page.

Kathy Cordova, Author and Producer/Co-Host of Cable TV's "In a Word"
---
Langer takes the reader along on her journey through her many illnesses, accidents and injuries, and there are some funny twists and turns on the way! A firm believer in the role humor plays in the healing process, she demonstrates through her personal trials how to acccept some measure of responsibility in one's own recovery from disease or disability.

Pat Goard, RN Practitioner
---
No one likes being ill or injured, and not everyone possesses the ability to "spit in the eye" of adversity. But, this book will point you in the right direction and give you the tools. Langer's stories never fail to give one a glimpse of climbing to the other side of hard times and holding onto the gift of laughter while making that journey.

Judy Hanneman, RN

About the Author

Annette Langer grew up in and around metropolitan Chicago where she received her undergraduate degree Magna Cum Laude from Loyola University with a major in Counseling Psychology. She spent a long career holding various positions with the Federal Government before reaching her ultimate goal: early retirement! Langer then prepared herself for her "life after" and went back to school, training for a second career as a travel agent, work she enjoyed for many years thereafter.
After living practically her entire life in the Midwest, Langer decided to pull up stakes in 1998 and head to California where she had always wanted to live. She knew she had made the right decision after seeing an advertisement in a travel magazine. It read: The sun comes up in the east as an obligation. Then the sun heads for California out of blatant self-interest. The sun is no dummy. California: find yourself here.

Retired now from the wacky world of travel planning, Langer has immersed herself in volunteer work and has renewed her love for writing, becoming an active member of the 100-year-old California Writers Club. She resides happily in the San Francisco Bay Area where she continues to meet life's challenges, but in better weather.

Early reviews of Langer's second book A Funny Thing Happened on  My Way to the World: Diary of a Fearless Travel Agent agree on her command of humor, as well as her ability to captivate readers with her tales of adventure, too.

More About the Author

Annette Langer shares a wide spectrum of topics based on her own life experiences, often poking good-natured fun at herself to make her point.

"Healing through Humor: Change Your Focus, Change Your Life!" offers readers inspiration, reflection, and pure entertainment through Langer's frequent use of humor to convey her message. Her stories detail how she overcame a serious brain injury from a head-on auto accident, breast cancer and many lesser illnesses and injuries. Some of her chapters will tickle your funny bone, such as "My First Cruise, My First Gallbladder Attack" and "How to Bathe while Bandaged or in a Plaster Cast" while others offer more serious, practical coping techniques. By following the doctor's orders and also by finding the funny side to these "unfunny" challenges, Langer shows readers how they, too, can learn ways to overcome obstacles, focusing their energy on the positives life has provided. You're left with the realization that better times are indeed possible despite the setbacks.

=================

"A Funny Thing Happened on My Way to the World: Diary of a Fearless Travel Agent" takes the reader along on Annette Langer's travels to all seven continents. Humor plays a prominent role in her stories once again, but she also details many unusual and, at times, sobering situations in which she's found herself, such as being held hostage in a workers' strike in Tahiti or managing to sleep through an earthquake in Peru! She balances her tales of adventure with many funny stories, as well, displaying her characteristic positive outlook. Whatever her topic, whatever her challenge (and yes, travel oftentimes can be a challenge), Langer's stories demonstrate how she's used humor to deal with the obstacle and how she prevailed. Whether you're an armchair traveler or a seasoned explorer, this book offers something for everyone!
=================

Her shorter works have appeared in several anthologies, including the Livermore Wine Country Literary Harvest; O'Brien's Literary Speculator Bright Beginnings; Voices of the Valley, First Press; and the "Chicken Soup for the Soul" series.

Annette Langer resides in the San Francisco Bay Area where she is an active member of the California Writers Club. When not pursuing her writing and speaking events, you'll find her keeping busy as a police volunteer with her local police department.

The thing that attracted me to this book, WAS it's cover. I had known someone that had this same statue in her home. Then I discovered the author was that person! I recently had double lung transplant at Emory hospital and before and after the surgery, I thought of the lessons she had taught me. Because of the fact that I knew this person, I am able to truthfully say, I have never seen a person able to overcome physical an mental stress in the same manner as the author She is truly an inspiration in her book and in person.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful By Lynette Pierce on June 17, 2009
Format: Paperback
I was really impressed how the author has been able to keep a good sense of humor considering all the trials she has been put through. I've never known anyone who has undergone two major head-on car crashes, multiple surguries and cancer, and still maintain such a healthy attitude about life. Perhaps it was the author's tribulations that gave her the appreciation of life and the ability to enjoy it to its fullest each and every day. In her book, she takes her "bad" experiences and retells the events so that they are funny and enjoyable to read. In fact, one can hardly wait to see what happens to the author next--as morbid as that may sound. I especially liked her account of what happened with her gall bladder surgery, and what she did afterwards with the stone. Sorry, I'm not going to spoil the surprise. You'll just have to get a copy of this book and find out for yourself.
