Book Description

March 24, 2009
In Healing Through Exercise, internationally bestselling science writer Jörg Blech sets out the actual physiological effects of exercise: it triggers the growth of new brain cells, induces stem cells in blood vessels, and reverses symptoms of heart disease and type 2 diabetes. Doctors are now using exercise to combat common ailments such as heart disease, arthritis, diabetes, osteoporosis, and depression.

Every one of us—whether a healthy athlete, a patient seeking to overcome a chronic disease, or a person desiring a longer, more mentally active life—can use the new and important information in this book.

Editorial Reviews

From Publishers Weekly

Blech (Inventing Disease and Pushing Pills) presents research from the U.S. and Europe and opinions of medical professionals pointing to exercise as the key to health and longevity and a powerful way to significantly cut health-care costs. Now an accepted part of cardiac care, exercise, says Blech, remains untapped to prevent, treat and even heal type 2 diabetes, osteoporosis, cancer, psychiatric disorders, chronic pain, cognitive impairment and learning disabilities. Biologically, Blech notes, humans are hunter/gatherers and were made to be continuously active. As societies gain convenience through technology, people become more sedentary and vulnerable to serious physical and mental decline typically attributed to aging. In fact, Blech states, this decline is like the wasting that begins in patients confined to bed for just a few days. Looking to the future, he includes preliminary findings on the positive impact exercise has on chronic fatigue patients and children with AD/HD. While he offers some easy ways to be more active, Blech's most frequently voiced news is good: a half hour of moderate, daily walking can make a big difference. (Mar.)

Review

Publishers Weekly, 2/2/09
“[Blech] offers some easy ways to be more active.”

Book a Week with Jen, 2/7/09
“It's a book worth reading, or at least skimming, especially if you or someone you know could use a healthy dose of exercise in their lives. And it's interesting too, which isn't always easy to do in such a research heavy book.”

St. Petersburg Times, 3/6/09
“Blech gathers exercise-related research and puts it into an easy-to-read form that shows, yes, a daily walk does the body a whole lot of good…If you've had it with trying a new drug to treat various ailments or need exercise motivation, it's well worth the read.”

InfoDad.com, 4/2/09
“Blech takes the now nearly universal recommendation to stop living a sedentary life in order to stay healthy and reduce the chance of sickness a big step further, recommending exercise as a primary treatment when disease does strike...There is a very good idea here, with some scientific backing for its effectiveness.”

RxMuscle.com, 3/30/09
“Blech is a science journalist with a clear writing style, and he doesn't get bogged down in too much science for the average reader.”

Spirituality & Health, 6/09
“Blech’s position as a science writer allows him something most doctors no longer have—time to access and evaluate vast quantities of new research…Blech’s book is a call to action, both personal and social, a call to get up and get moving.”

Bookviews.com, 5/09
“This book makes a strong case for the need to exercise…If you are seeking a healthier life, I would definitely recommend you read this book.”

Midwest Book Review, June 2009
“General-interest and health collections will find this timely and popular.”

SZ, Summer 2009
“Blech lays our how and why exercise benefits the body, and gives plenty of examples backed by scientific studies presented in easy-to-read language.”

Choice, Sept 2009
“Blech’s background enables him to make sense of the science involved in this topic. That, and his skill as a journalist, combine to make this book easy to read and understand…Written in a manner appropriate for general readers, this book reflects a generous use of medical citations that could make it valuable to health care practitioners as well. Public and academic libraries with alternative medicine collections will find it a useful addition. Summing up: Recommended.”

ScienceWriters
“[Blech] builds the case for exercise with examples ranging from President Eisenhower’s heart treatment to studies conducted by NASA, dismantling old preconceptions about bed rest along the way.”

Metapsychology Online Reviews, 11/21/09
“Written in a relatively informal, and quite lay reader friendly, manner…[A] very fine book.”

The Key Reporter, Fall 2010
“[A] well-documented and scientifically researched book…It has the potential to bring novel solutions to the increasing health care costs of modern societies.”

5.0 out of 5 stars Exercise as a Cure?, March 18, 2009
This review is from: Healing through Exercise: Scientifically-Proven Ways to Prevent and Overcome Illness and Lengthen Your Life (Hardcover)
We all know the benefits of exercise, right? Think again...

New scientifically proven research, as presented in HEALING THROUGH EXERCISE by Jorg Blech (the US-based science correspondent for Der Spiegel, Europe's largest weekly news magazine), shows that not only is exercise good for you, it actually cures many medical conditions, among them: heart disease, type 2 diabetes, cancer, osteoporosis, obesity, psychiatric disorders, learning disabilities, cognitive impairment, ADHD, chronic fatigue, and much more.

Whereas in the past, physicians urged bed rest for some types of medical conditions such as heart disease, they are now seeing that the opposite prescription (exercise) is the key to overcoming these conditions.

Besides muscular deterioration, bed rest can make it difficult to recover quickly from a condition because bed rest causes all body processes to slow. In order to perform at peak, body processes must remain active. This is one reason why exercise is so important in recovery.

In addition to being the key to health and longevity, exercise has the potential for solving some of the insurance costs associated with health coverage today. In a health care system that is spiraling out of control, I think everyone would agree that we can all live with lower health coverage costs.

Good health depends on the medical knowledge we share and the habits we adopt and instill in our children. For this reason, I believe there is no better investment in the future than to apply what we now know about exercise.

HEALING THROUGH EXERCISE would be a great addition to the library of anyone who is interested in curing a medical condition and/or in maintaining health and longevity. Beyond this, I think it would also be a good addition to the athletic departments of K-12 schools everywhere. After all, exercise and good health are learned, and should become habitual.

I enjoyed reading the book very much. It is easy to read and has wonderful examples. The book motivated me and my family to move around as much as possible in our daily live. Going together for a hike or a bike ride puts us all in a good mood. I like the books perspective: It is never to late to start to exercise. "Healing through Exercise" is a great message.
