5.0 out of 5 stars Fantastic Book for Your Health July 24, 2009
Format:Hardcover
Health and Beauty from the Rainforest is filled with rich history about Malaysia. You will learn all about the people, cultures and medicinal ways.

The way the people treat their beauty, mind, body and soul is amazing. I love that they use all natural things from the rainforest. (I am now actually jealous I do not live there!) Everyone could learn a lot from them in this fantastic book.

The book is absolutely stunning as it is filled with breathtaking photos. The photos help you get even more understanding out of it.

I highly recommend this book to anyone who likes learning about history and wants to live a healthier life.

5.0 out of 5 stars Herbal Care and the Rainforest! July 22, 2009
Format:Hardcover
My interest in Malaysian culture was piqued after watching Andrew Zimmern's Bizarre Foods on TV. I decided to go to Amazon.com and see if they had anything on the subject. This book stood out amongst the rest. It not only teaches us of the Malaysian traditions, but also the traditions of ramuan "healing mixture of medicinal plants and plant parts". The book lists the various plants and herbs in the rainforest, along with their healing properties. There is also a botanical glossary which gives us the local name of the plant, the scientific name, and other names the plant is known by. For instance, lets take buah pala, its scientific name is myristica fragrans, It is more commonly known as nutmeg. Of course, now I wonder how it got the name nutmeg. Was Meg acting goofy when she ate the plant?

Whoever picked out the photos in this book did a spectacular job. They are gorgeous! I especially liked the photos of the people and the rainforest. If you are into geography, cultures, medicinal healing, or just like to look at beautiful photos, then I give this book a big thumbs up!

5.0 out of 5 stars An insightful and beautiful book March 22, 2013
Format:Hardcover
"Ramuan" is a Malay word for a healing mixture of plants used in medicine, cooking, and for beauty and spa treatments. Like elsewhere, Malaysia's rainforests hold an abundance of herbs and flowers. The difference is that over many generations, special customs for their use have been developed by Malaysian herbalists, healers, and shamans (bomoh) drawing on the mix of Chinese, Indian, Malay and other indigenous cultures resident in this beautiful tropical Southeast Asian country.

Just under a year ago, I was privileged to meet Dr. Gerry Bodeker and learn about his exceptional research into the global traditions for health and healing. An Oxford scholar as well as a medical doctor specializing in epidemiology, he has become one of the world's leading experts on herbs and their traditional uses. Commissioned by the World Health Organization (WHO) and other groups, he has spent years researching the ways traditional healers use the available natural resources to cure disease and promote health. In recent years, Dr. Bodeker has been invited to provide guidance to some of the world's top spas as they develop new holistic wellness centers.

As Editor-in-chief of a large group of writers, editors, and publishing team, Dr. Bodeker has created the definitive book on Malaysian "Ramuan." Subtitled "Health and Beauty from the Rainforest," the book is a treasure trove revealing little-known secrets and customs. With extensive lists of the herbs used and both traditional and scientific explanations, it is both a scientific study and a highly readable `coffee table book.' It offers insights and inspiration including specific ways and means for creating your own personal health and beauty therapies.
