Mosby needs to either yank this book from their catalog or publish a 2nd edition. It's from 2002 and the information is so outdated as to be useless. I took a nursing informatics course and for some inexplicable reason, this textbook was required. I flipped through it once and never cracked it again. As just one example, there is almost no discussion of CPOE (Computerized Physician Order Entry). I mean, really! In 2002, computers were much slower, there were fewer peripherals and add-ons, PDAs had hardly come into common use in the healthcare setting, etc., etc. And computer security issues were less complicated at that time. Come on, Mosby, this book should embarrass you!

Good basic overview; easy to read. Most of the information is pretty timeless, so it doesn't hurt that it has been in print for awhile. Nice reference.

If you purchase just one textbook for the ANCC Nursing Informatics certification exam, make it this one. Clear, concise, easy to read. Covers all areas of the test. But don't forget to get the ANA Nursing Informatics Standards too. Good luck on the exam!

This text is helpful to understand the basics about health care informatics. It explains everything in easy terms and key concepts are listed at the beginning of each chapter. Also, web links are included for further information.

I have not finished the book but so far it is a great introduction to informatics.
