Health Care USA, Seventh Edition, offers students of health administration, medicine, public health, and related fields the most comprehensive overview of America’s health care system under a single cover. Combining historical perspective with analysis of modern trends, this expanded edition charts the evolution of modern American health care, providing a complete examination of its organization and delivery while offering critical insight into the issues that the U.S. health system faces today. From a physician-dominated system to one defined by managed care and increasingly sophisticated technology, this essential text explains the transformation underway and the professional, political, social, and economic forces that guide it today and will in the future. Exhaustive in breadth and balanced in perspective, Health Care USA, Seventh Edition, provides students with a clearly organized, straightforward illustration of the complex structures, relationships and processes of this rapidly growing, $2.5 trillion industry. The seventh edition has been thoroughly revised to reflect recent developments in this dynamic industry. The latest edition features: • A comprehensive overview of the complex and evolving U.S. health care system, plus revised data, material and analysis throughout. • The latest benchmark developments in health care, including the response of public health to swine flu and the Obama administration’s health care reform. • A look at the recent recession’s effects on hospital finances. • New projections and data trends on the country’s health care spending. • A forward-looking perspective on the future of the U.S. health care system.

4.0 out of 5 stars Comprehensive introduction, great resource February 21, 2011
Format:Paperback
This book has something on everything. Very comprehensive. Written with a slightly liberal, social justice bias, this book is a great introduction to how the Health Care System works in the US, its flaws and recent developments. Knowing very little about the US system beforehand, I now feel I have a solid grounding in the basics, with a knowledge of the higher level issues too. The reference list at the end of each chapter is invaluable. It is worth getting the most recent edition as this 7th Ed has been bang up to date for my purposes, with a LOT of updates on developments under the Obama administration compared to my colleagues 6th edition. I have given only 4 stars rather than 5 as I did find the long sentences a bit too much prose for bedtime reading, I found myself breaking the prose into shorter sentences myself! Nonetheless, the sections are clearly labelled and broken into accessible 1-2 page mini-sections within chapters and the index and contents are very good so I would not say the wordiness should put you off if you are used to reading undergraduate or other academic texts.

1.0 out of 5 stars Not even close to educational! January 2, 2014

I had to buy this book for a class... what a joke! I have worked in healthcare for over 10 years and this book is so off. People are being taught the wrong things and sorry but any book that starts with,” Obama saved healthcare.” is laughable!

1.0 out of 5 stars HORRIBLE BOOK October 29, 2013
By student
Format:Paperback
I don't understand why my professor assigns this horrible book. The authors do not sufficiently explain the legislations. Even worse, there are a TON of subjective statements that are NOT supported by any sources. This book is a piece of GARBAGE. I am so mad :(

3.0 out of 5 stars nursing book September 27, 2013

Difficult to read and understand some of the content. Part of the reason, I'm sure, was because the class was boring and uninteresting.

As an MPH student, it is critical for us to understand healthcare organization and delivery. This book does a fantastic job! As an added bonus, I have had the pleasure of being taught by Christina herself! I am constantly amazed by her credidentials and the level of knowledge she has acquired over the years.

Some of the tables are contradicting, otherwise good book. It opens the mind up to the Healthcare world and problems we face in the US.
