An excellent introductory text for undergrads,
By A Customer
This review is from: Health Care USA: Understanding Its Organization and Delivery (Hardcover)
I used this book as a textbook for a junior-level undergrad course I taught entitled Health Systems Administration. It provides an excellent overview to our U.S. health care system and covers basic material such as how medical education, ambulatory care and health care personnel needs currently are addressed and likely changes in the future. I anticipate using this text again when I teach the course.

I'm graduating this semester in Health Care Mangement. I reference this book my entire time. This book was a great summary of healthcare. Many say it's hard to read, but I think it did a very good job getting the point across. Before reading this book, I had no knowledge of health care. I felt this one book was able to cover every aspect of health care. This book is well worth it.

My class required the 7th edition. I found that purchasing the 6th edition (at a much lower price) worked for my class. It first I was skeptical having the earlier version, so I emailed the publisher, asked and received the 7th edition updates for free. Works for me!

Comprehensive introduction, great resource,
This review is from: Health Care USA: Understanding Its Organization and Delivery, Seventh Edition (Paperback)
This book has something on everything. Very comprehensive. Written with a slightly liberal, social justice bias, this book is a great introduction to how the Health Care System works in the US, its flaws and recent developments. Knowing very little about the US system beforehand, I now feel I have a solid grounding in the basics, with a knowledge of the higher level issues too. The reference list at the end of each chapter is invaluable. It is worth getting the most recent edition as this 7th Ed has been bang up to date for my purposes, with a LOT of updates on developments under the Obama administration compared to my colleagues 6th edition. I have given only 4 stars rather than 5 as I did find the long sentences a bit too much prose for bedtime reading, I found myself breaking the prose into shorter sentences myself! Nonetheless, the sections are clearly labelled and broken into accessible 1-2 page mini-sections within chapters and the index and contents are very good so I would not say the wordiness should put you off if you are used to reading undergraduate or other academic texts.

Health Care USA: Understanding Its Organization And Delivery,
This review is from: Health Care USA: Understanding Its Organization And Delivery (Paperback)
I found it very unfortunate that when I looked at this product earlier, the photo shows that it is the 5th edition, but when looking at an inside picture of the product it is listed on the front cover as the 6th edition. I found this to be very misleading. I had needed the 6th edition for my online class and when I received my purchase it was the 5th edition. Thank goodness I was able to contact the publisher and get the changes that had been made from the 5th edition to the 6th edition but it does discourage me from buying more textbooks.

This book is hard to read. I would rather have a book that is not filled with extra large words, nominalizations and third person perspective. Here is an example:
Policy makers and care managers assert that physicians' expressed concern over quality is a way to resist scrutiny and accountability without regard for economic efficiency. And another: In spite of its impressive accomplishments, the American health care system exhibits inexplicable contradictions in objectives, unwarranted variations in performance, effectiveness, and efficiency, and long-standing difficulties in its relationships with the public and with governments. Can you imagine paying $64.95 for this book if you were a student and had to buy it? Why must academics write this way!?!?! Thank goodness I only paid $10 for the used version.

I would have given it a minus three stars if it had been available,
By Raven (Utah) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Health Care, U.S.A: Understanding Its Organization and Delivery (Paperback)
This is the hardest to read textbook I have ever owned. Textbook authors need to understand that they are writing for students, not their peers. I want the basics. I want to be able to read it in my own language and not have to continually look up words that the majority of people never use. I have other things to do with my time besides trying to decipher what the authors are trying to say. It's as if it's written in code and you have to figure out what it means. It's like learning a different language. They could have put the important stuff in a book about 50 pages long and left out 400 pages of filler.
