Review

Overall I really like this text. It seems to fit my students well. It almost feels like it was written specifically for my class.

Based on what I have seen during this review I will serious consider using this text again. I think Henderson does a nice job in most of the chapters making the economics sensible and easy to understand for the students.

About the Author

James W. Henderson earned his Ph.D. at Southern Methodist University and is Ben H. Williams Professor of Economics at Baylor University. His teaching and scholarly research focus on health economics and health policy. Before joining the Baylor faculty, he served as vice president of finance and management at the Dallas Minority Business Center. Professor Henderson's economic research has appeared in a variety of professional journals, including HEALTH CARE FINANCING REVIEW, JOURNAL OF DEVELOPMENT ECONOMICS, JOURNAL OF RURAL HEALTH, and PHARMACOECONOMICS. He also has lectured in the United Kingdom, South Africa, Mexico, Sweden, and the Ukraine.

I had the pleasure of taking this class from the author of this class. Dr. Henderson is not only absolutely excellent teacher, he is an equally good writer. I was not an economics major, and was somewhat fearful about taking "Economics of Medicine" as a class, but this book is thorough, organized, and easy to understand. It is an excellent book for economics majors as well as those majoring in other health care related professions who have an interest in learning more about the current health care system and related policies.

The text is quite dated for a 2005 edition. All of the citations are over 5 years old. The material is written at highly advanced economics level and may not be appropriate as a multi-disciplinary text.

Dr. Henderson has written a book is very helpful to anyone interested in all factors that surround health policy. One does not have to have a background in economics to benefit from this book. It is an excellent reference to anyone who is pursuing a health-related degree, or simply interested in our current health care system, factors that have influenced the development of our current health care system, and comparisons to the health care systems of other countries, and more. I took the class on this subject from the author several years ago. He is extremely brilliant and knowledgable in his field, and very interesting. I am equally glad that I did not sell back the book. I have used it for a reference many times as I have continued on in my education.
