Editorial Reviews

Review

From the reviews:

“This book is a very interesting contribution to a novel emerging field. It is organized into eight chapters. … The book is well done, but since it focuses largely on the US healthcare system, it will mostly be of interest to readers in the US.” (Pietro Hiram Guzzi, Computing Reviews, April, 2013)

“This volume in the Springer Briefs in Computer Science series is a short … introduction to health informatics, the application of computer technology to healthcare delivery systems and research. … Written for nontechnical readers working in medicine and allied health, the book is also intended for graduate students in information technology who have no background in healthcare … . I highly recommend the book for those seeking a sophisticated primer.” (Frank R. Ames, Doody’s Book Reviews, January, 2013)

This is written by my MOOC professor at Georgia Tech and it is obvious a lot of research and refinement of an excruciating amount of technical detail was boiled down into easy to understand terms and concepts. Thought the price a bit steep ($33)for a less than 100 page paper back text but it helped me to further understand what is being delivered in the lectures; so worth the investment.

Health Informatics in the Cloud (SpringerBriefs in Computer Science)

I found this book at the 2013 HIMSS Conference, the show-case for the healthcare informatics industry. Reviewing titles in the book station, I thought the title was fetching, and the heft very light, so I perused the chapter list, connected to the topics, bought it, and read it on a flight back from New Orleans to New York.

Health Informatics in the Cloud is a fine primer for people who are observers of the industry, as well as those in the applied clinical informatics space. It covers medical themes, software themes, and - lightly! - regulatory themes and industry dynamics. To clarify its scope, I'd be tempted to give it a subtitle such as: A Very Brief History of Health Informatics Before The Cloud, Too!

The author, Dr. Braunstein, presents a concise past, present, & near-term future outlook for this area. He provides an appropriate level of background and context, and then goes into recent, current, and prospective developments. He opines wisely (and charitably!) about both clinical and patient-centered subjects. For those who cannot imagine going through narrow, highly technical materials or, otherwise, fend mostly with journalistic or promotional/hawking accounts, Dr. Braunstein provides a darn good "fix."

(NB. I had earlier made Dr. Braunstein's professional acquaintance, but I did not know about this book. I will say that his personal style, which is very engaging and energetic in person, is reflected in this book.)

I've been a health information technology professional for many years during which I've read numerous industry books and publications. I have found that few communicate their message succinctly and provide information of use in the real world. Health Informatics in the Cloud provides just these targeted insights and discusses the US healthcare system's challenges and opportunities especially well. This book is well researched, referenced and written with the appropriate level of detail for healthcare professionals and novices, alike. I feel this book would be of great value to students entering the field and also suggest making Health Informatics in the Cloud a required read for new hires during healthcare technology companies' orientation process. Well done!
