3.0 out of 5 stars A LOT of information for undergraduates!, October 26, 2006
By
This review is from: Health Information Management: Concepts, Principles, and Practice, Second Edition (Hardcover)
HUGE textbook and A LOT of very technical information - much of it hard to digest for an introductory health information course. (This is my dilemma now - I am in an introductory course but the book is designed to model the four-year/baccalaurreate AHIMA curriculum) which means that it is really not the best textbook for an introductory course because it is too comprehensive. I guess that can be a plus, getting four years' worth of info crammed into one semester, and you could look at it as a bargain in that respect (if you don't go crazy from information overload.)And need I say it is a sure cure for insomnia--very technical and dry content.

I bought this text book for self-study to review and learn more about the subject of Information Management (IM). This 4-year college degree stand-alone text book goes even farther by detailing what IM is and how it is best used in the very critical, large, and complex field of Healthcare. The book is laid out in an easy to read fashion. There is a glossary of Health Information Management (HIM) terms in the back of the book. Frequently used abbreviations and acronyms, and Initialisms are spelled out on the inside covers for easy use. Thus, most needed subject study information is contained within this text book.

The book is laid out for easy use in reading and self-study covering in simplistic, but thorough detail, all aspects of Information Management and how it applies to Healthcare. A systems approach is applied to the book's contents. The start of each chapter includes learning objectives, key terms, and a thorough introduction to what is contained in the chapter with a chapter summary at the end. Each chapter also includes Understanding Exercises for better understanding of key points and the answers to the chapter questions are in the back of the book. This is a great self-study feature not found in many of today's textbooks for they normally leave many of the needed answers out. Finally, the back of the book includes appendices, a glossary, and an index.

I especially liked this text book due to how well it was laid out for self-study, its subject thoroughness covering all aspects of Healthcare Information Management, and its ease of reading and study.
