Consistent, informative book., December 6, 2007
This review is from: Health Information Management Technology: An Applied Approach, Second Edition with Workbook (Hardcover)
I had to read a good chunk of this book for a class I was taking. I felt like the information was presented in a very clear fashion, with plenty of useful and relevant tables and charts, yet still enough text to thoroughly explain the concepts. Of all the classes I was taking at the time, I initially dreaded this one the most, because health information management and technology sounds like a pretty SNOOZE topic (and I've got about 8 music-related books I'd rather be reading).
Surprisingly, though, I began to respect the subject and understand it's importance. As mentioned before, the writing is clear, yet the author doesn't talk down to the reader. No chapter took more than an hour to comprehend (typically 30 minutes). I really can't ask for much more from a textbook (especially one I wasn't too thrilled to be reading in the first place).
If it can satisfy a cynic like me, it can't be THAT bad.
Plus, the information in the 2007 edition has apparently changed little since the 2002 edition. Instead of paying $90.00+ for the former, I paid $2.00 for the latter through Amazon Marketplace...and I still did pretty well on the tests. Ka-Ching!!
You can't beat that!!

Health Information Management Technology, April 9, 2009
This review is from: Health Information Management Technology: An Applied Approach, Second Edition with Workbook (Hardcover)
This book is a must-read for those who are interested in pursuing a career in healthcare. It can be a bit technical, but if you're serious you'll appreciate every word. It's a book you should keep and refer to for future reference. There are some typos, and mistakes on chapter answers in back of book, but nothing to fuss about. Very informative if you're interested in a career with health information.

Excellent resource I will be using for a long time., December 12, 2010
This review is from: Health Information Management Technology: An Applied Approach, Second Edition with Workbook (Hardcover)
I am taking HIT classes online, and my school provides ebooks. While I like the convenience of them, I wanted another option than just reading on the computer screen for this one, especially as I knew this one would come in handy on the job too just by reading the description and checking out the AHIMA (the publisher) website. Well, when I first bought this book, I didn't realize HOW useful it would be in the future. I have already used it for 2 classes and will be using it for a class that starts in January. I actually love having the book for this so much, that a friend of mine who is taking classes as well (love that we are at the same point and can study together) was convinced to buy the book too after using mine for her current class (I was taking other classes that didn't require it - general education stuff). I just wish I could have gotten it as cheap as she did. The new ones through the marketplace have dropped considerably since I bought it earlier this year! I think the information is well laid out and very easy to understand without being too dumbed down. Having the review questions throughout the chapter is very nice too so that you can review as you go without having to do it at the end of the chapters. With all this being said, I don't care for the workbook. This may be because we don't use it. I don't find it very useful at all, especially as there are no answers in it like there is in the book. We have discussion threads as part of our online course, so the discussion topics aren't useful to me at all. My recommendation is that unless you have to have the workbook, don't worry about getting it. UPDATE
There is a more current edition of this book now, and it is much more up to date as it talks more about the electronic aspect of health information than this edition does. Unless you need this edition for your class, your are probably better off paying the extra money for the more current edition for studying for the RHIT or RHIA exams. Also, the new edition doesn't have the paper workbook but includes it as a CD. If you don't need that, I probably wouldn't worry about it if you buy the book used and it doesn't include the CD.
