Book Description

January 1996
Adequate and affordable health insurance does exist -- you just have to know where and how to find it. Dr. Robert Enteen shows how to locate and evaluate coverage, compare costs, and obtain the maximum benefits -- even from an existing insurance plan. He outlines strategies that will help readers find insurance protection even if they are currently uninsured, underinsured, or considered uninsurable because of a preexisting condition.

This new edition contains a completely revised introduction covering the current trend toward managed care, recent state-by-state improvements in health insurance options, and a comprehensive update on whether and how to buy long-term care insurance. The book is filled with useful information, suggestions, resource lists, and "next steps" to gain essential insurance protection.

Editorial Reviews

From Publishers Weekly

As Enteen reports, 37 million Americans do not have health insurance. For some, it's because they don't know any better, but under most circumstances the fault is exorbitant cost, exorbitant cost, or an inability to obtain insurance due to unfortunate health histories. Although Enteen, an insurance specialist on the staff of the National Multiple Sclerosis Society and a member of three national and state health insurance advisory committees, cannot promise adequate, fairly priced insurance for all, he does explain how to shop for for the best deal. The author compares costs, assesses private health insurance, group and individual plans, and tells how to get the most out of one's policy. He also covers government health insurance, including programs for federal employees, as well as veterans' benefits, Medicaid, Medicare and Medigap. Most chapters are presented in a checklist format, making the book extremely user-friendly--even for those prepared for some boredom in reading. Also included: an extensive glossary of terms and a list of state health, insurance and workers' compensation offices.

Review

Health Insurance: How To Get It, Keep It, Or Improve What You've Got shows how to locate and evaluate coverage, compare costs, and obtain the maximum benefits -- even from your existing insurance plan. It outlines strategies that will help you find insurance regardless of whether you are uninsured, underinsured, or considered "uninsurable". And it provides the knowledge to improve your ability to get the most out of any health insurance plan. Health Insurance covers current trends toward managed care, recent state-by-state improvements in health insurance options, a comprehensive update on whether and how to buy long-term care insurance with special sections for people with disabilities, the implications of the Americans with Disabilities Act for employment-based insurance, plus other important changes and trends that have emerged over the past few years. A comprehensive "Options Checklist" will help you identify the health insurance option that best suits your needs,. Then you can consult individual sections on private health insurance options, government health insurance options, regular and special "COBRA" options, where to got if you are turned down for coverage or if you think you've been treated unfairly, how to appeal a denial of a claim, and what to do if you have a "preexisting condition". -- Midwest Book Review
