By estimating body fat as well as measuring weight, this device presents a dual snapshot of personal health. It estimates body fat by sending a safe, imperceptible, low-level electrical pulse through the body. (Healthcare professionals use similar electrical-pulse devices to estimate body fat by what is known as bioelectrical impedance analysis, or BIA.) The device operates on one 9-volt battery (not included), and its LCD screen displays body fat in percentage and weight in either 1/2-pound or 0.2 kg increments up to 330 pounds or 150 kilograms. Toe-touch controls next to the easy-to-read, 3-1/8-by-1/4-inch LCD permit two users to store personal data (height, age, gender) for body-fat calculations. "User 1" and "User 2" buttons then recall a user's data. Within seconds of stepping on the scale, weight is displayed, followed by body-fat percentage. The device turns off automatically. When the battery needs replacing, the LCD displays an "L." The handsome platform is clad in brushed stainless steel and matte gray plastic, grooved to prevent feet from slipping. It measures 12 by 11-1/2 inches and carries a five-year warranty against defects. --Fred Brack
